Dallas/Austin Car Trips To Get Even Worse

I-35 constructionThe Austin American Statesman helpfully produced this map to show TxDot construction about to take place on the state’s only central north-south corrider. For a larger version, go to Ben Wear’s column on the plans here.

What was all that about a tollroad?

  1. Just using Google Maps, from my house in the (817) to “Austin, Texas” is 191 miles and 3 hours and 39 minutes. This is using I-35. If you take the “back road” through the country via Stephenville and Lampasas is is only 29 miles further and 44 minutes longer. But probably there would be a lot less stress involved in taking the country roads. And let’s face it, we have relatively good country roads in Texas.

  4. I love the scenic road taking 281 problem is I always get speeding tickets in those small towns where the limit changes from 65 down to 40 so fast it makes your head spin.

  5. @Candy: Slow down…take the time to smell the bluebonnets, the Indian paintbrush or even the buttercups (yup, you like butter!). Besides, like Big D and FW, those towns are needing more money these days too.

  7. The 281 route is awful. Don’t take it. Tons of traffic signals in Cedar Park and Lampassas plus the signal on the square in Hamilton is never green. Speed limit of 30 in Lampassas and Hamilton will slow you down terrible. The chocolate place across from the Koffee Kup in Hico is, however, a nice consolation prize if you must go that way. You can get Dublin Dr Pepper in the convenience stores in Hico also.
