Are we looking at a rebound in retail sales (I hope, I hope)? Two Dallas-based retailers, on opposite sides of the price spectrum, seem to be leading the way. Neiman’s same-store sales are up 4.7 percent. JC Penney’s are up 5.1 percent.

I’d be interested to see if the 3.3% increase in comp sales for NMG Specialty Retail is driven by their full line stores or their newly reorganized and expanded Clearance/Last Call division. The margins are quite a bit higher in the full line stores, especially now considering they haven’t had to unload as much surplus inventory at reduced prices as they have in prior years.
But alas, the NMG SEC filings don’t tell us these things.

No NMG SEC tealeaves to read but you learn a lot over drinks. NM’s fortunes are poised to be stellar. The course correction has taken 2 years, like a battleship turning left. But the re-directed company now has karen katz running the entire show. And trust me; KK is so smart, you can read in the dark by the sparks she gives off.

Rawlins is right…and, NM has been profitable even in the downturn.
