Russ Martin’s Ratings Slip After Early Spike

Awhile back, I put up a post about early numbers on Russ Martin. In the first three days of his return to the airwaves, he pulled in some impressive numbers, taking the station from No. 14 to No. 1 during his time slot with 25-to-54 demo. A source I quoted, though, cautioned that three days is a but a tiny snapshot. And now that picture has had some time to develop. What is shows is that early interest in Martin has waned a bit. Below are the numbers through his first three weeks on the air — which come with the same caveat. Three weeks is a better picture than three days, but it’s still only three weeks.

Men 18 to 34 — down three weeks in a row
July Wk 3 9.0 #2
July Wk 4 8.8 #3
Aug Wk 1 7.1 #6

Adults 18 to 34 — down three weeks in a row
July Wk 3 8.2 #1
July Wk 4 6.8 #3
Aug Wk 1 5.0 #5

Adults 25 to 54 — down a full share
July Wk 3 5.1 #3
July Wk 4 5.2 #3
Aug Wk 1 3.9 #7

  3. Let me guess: Russ will spin this by telling his listeners that he’s “still number one”, and his listeners will believe him. When will his audience figure out that he could be in last place yet would still claim “number one”? His old trick that keeps on tricking.

  7. There is just something missing with his show. I still find him funny, but something is missing with this new team.

  8. It’s only been three weeks. Give me a break. Still well above 14, I will point out. There are still plenty of people who don’t know he’s back, on the Eagle and on in the mornings. Give it time, haters.

  10. Lets me fair. He was able to take a bad station and bring it into the top 10. For raido thats huge!

I’ve listened to the show for years and what keeps me coming back is the fact that he does and says things that we all want to. They always have hear converstions and great bits that keep you listening. I agree that something is missing, and that is his time slot. He needs to move back to drive time and retake his thrown!

“He needs to move back to drive time and retake his thrown!”

Uh, Morning Drive is the “thrown.” Afternoon drive is the queen’s tuffet.

  13. Lol, i actually find his show too political for my tastes. How do you like your treehouse of fellas mixed with a hard shot of right-wing political agenda. Mmmm… No Thanks. And being on in the mornings just sours the deal even further.

  14. A lot of stations in this market would give their left, um… woofer for a top 5 in men 18-34 in the dog days of summer. He’s paying off big for the Eagle.

  15. You have to love the build him up just so we can tear him down mentality.

If you go from 14 to to 1, and then drop to 8 you’re still a hell of a lot better off then you were. If anyone thought the number one spot would stay forever they were idiots, it was a fluke in the system, but he still doing better than the station was before, so hey give the guy some credit.

Your story should be Martin takes Station to top ten in three weeks. I don’t think even Clear Channel thought the ratings would increase that quick. He was gone for a year and half, and there has been almost no media campaign about his return, it’s going to take a while for word of mouth to get around to his listeners, and for them to come back.

tell you what lets give the guy 6 months and see where he stands before we proclaim him irrelevant and no longer able to draw an audience. If we are going to muse over snippets every few weeks, it’s going to look like a roller coaster most likely, with high weeks and low weeks.

  16. I can’t stand Dan O’Malley… His “attempts” to be funny fall completely flat 99% of the time and it clearly leaves Russ struggling to find a place to go with the conversation.

These gaps are very noticable…. It’s the ONLY reason I can’t listen to the show 24/7.

Move Dan back to the phones, and get JD back on the air… Your ratings will thank you for it.
