What to Do in Dallas This Weekend: Aug. 13-15

Friday already? It seems like just yesterday I was staring forlornly at the 10-day forecast, calculating whether I had enough clean short-sleeved garments to last the week.

Discerning listeners of Texas music will be pleased to learn that Monte Montgomery is in town tonight. This guy’s technique is impressive, which you might expect from someone named among the top 50 guitarists of all time by Guitar Player Magazine. The Granada strikes me as the perfect venue for this show, which should be terrific. Don’t be surprised if you leave vowing to take guitar lessons.

Saturday is family day for many of you, and I’ve found two kid-friendly events well worth considering. Hook ‘Em for Heroes offers you and your spawn a chance to fish together while also helping pediatric cancer patients and their families. Plus, the 8 a.m. start time should make the temperature almost tolerable.

After a few hours in the sun, you’ll be ready to head indoors. The Museum of Nature and Science is hosting Discover Fine Arts, an event that teaches kids how creativity and science work together. Noteworthy activities include music therapy sessions, using centrifugal force to create art, an origami lecture, and a collaborative mural that will be displayed at the Winspear Opera House during the Blue Man Group’s upcoming stint in Dallas.

Later, head out to see Loretta Lynn at Billy Bob’s. Bring your significant other and/or your parents to see this country music legend and genuine class act. I’m 99.9 percent confident you won’t be disappointed.

Sunday, after you’ve checked in on the international Scrabble tournament taking place in Addison, head to Saks Off 5 to hunt for some discounted designer sunglasses, which you’ll need for the Texas Rangers’ afternoon bout with the Red Sox. You’ll also need to encase your body in some kind of self-contained cooling apparatus, but I can’t help you there.

Not what you were looking for? Find other things to do in Dallas this weekend.
