Friday Question (8/13/10)

I’m figuring that most of us have some kind of smart phone — a Droid, an iPhone, whatever the hell there is besides a Droid and an iPhone.

What is your favorite app right now? What does it do?

Mine? Soundhound, which will identify a song even if it’s one of those that’s stuck in your head and you need to know who sings it. If you want it to tell you, you can sing what you know, and it’ll try to identify it. Second favorites? Lo-Mob, and 7.0 MPX.

  2. HTC Touch Pro running WinMobile 6.5

Favorite app? No question, Google maps. It’s my go-to for directions, traffic, sights, reviews, addresses, phone numbers… just about everything.

  3. iMovie: It oversimplifies the editing process. But I love taking video of my family and being able to edit the stuff into a movie and have it up on YouTube in about 10 minutes. It’s worth the $5.

Dragon Dictation: Why type a text (or an email) when you can speak it? It’s free, and it works really well. And when it DOESN’T work, sometimes that’s fun, too.

  4. Angry Birds. Best time-waster game ever!

  5. CardStar: Since every single store has a rewards card program for discounts it is a necessity to become a member. This app allows you to enter in the barcode number and it creates a replica of the card that can be scanned in the store (Tom Thumb, Dicks, YMCA, PetSmart, etc). So now my keys don’t look like a little tikes toy.

  6. No apps for moi. Steve Jobs is killing the browser and, therefore, the free Internet and the open-source movement. Apple is becoming the new Microsoft. Eeee-vil.

  10. Mine’s got a picture of a spiral. Push the button and it turns bright red. You can heat up a cup of soup on it.
    Oh wait. That’s my stove.

  12. @Chris: The Keyring app from Mobestream Media, a Dallas company, is kicking Cardstar’s butt. Same concept only better executed.

  14. Since I listen to podcasts rather than music or the radio, my favorite is “Super BT Mono”. This little app sends the android’s audio to a normal bluetooth earpiece. So I listen to shows while I shop, work around the house, drive, whatever. $6.
BN: the freeware BTaudio does this on WM smartphones, and Softick Audio Gateway on PalmOS.

I generally feed tunes to it using Zimly and scrobble with Scrobble Droid. Zimly plays “MP3, OGG, ACC (audio), MP4 and 3GP (video)”.

The simplest and most wondrous app for both platforms is the night view stuff. It’s called Google Sky on android and I think Star Walk on the iPose stuff.

@bethany – “whatever the hell there is besides a Droid and an iPhone”

To nitpick, a Droid is one particular Android phone not the generic name for all Android phones. But, whatever.

To answer your question there are Windows, Symbian, Moblin, and WebOS (ie, new Palm) phones out there. That’s off the top of my head.

Re: keyring/cardstar – I’d be hesitant to hand any $$$ smartphone to checkers who are willing to prove they can’t even handle /produce/ carefully.

  17. @Grover: How is KeyRing kicking CardStar’s butt? CardStar has 2M+ downloads and money…I think Verizon just invested.
