Word comes today that the folks at that grand experiment – the Texas Tribune – have picked up two Edward R. Murrow awards. Having only been around for a year, the Tribune kind of came out of the box ready to produce the kind of journalism major metro dailies used to do regularly, and still do occasionally.
The press release, after the jump:
Today The Texas Tribune received two national Edward R. Murrow awards, an esteemed acknowledgement of journalistic integrity. The Radio Television Digital News Association has been honoring excellence in electronic journalism with the Murrow awards since 1971. Recipients of the Murrow display the commitment to greatness that Edward R. Murrow made a standard for broadcast news.
The overall Tribune website was awarded “Best Non-Broadcast Affiliate Website” in the nation, an award category only in its second year. Entries within this category were judged on depth of news coverage, innovation, and use of Internet technologies.
The Tribune’s Elise Hu won the national award for “Best Use of Video” by a non-broadcast affiliated site, for her video series “Stump Interrupted.” The series provides an innovative take on candidate stump speeches, applying text and animation bubbles (as seen on VH1’s Pop Up Video) throughout political speeches to add context, trivia, and humor.
A non-profit, nonpartisan online news organization, The Texas Tribune is dedicated to engaging readers in politics, public policy and governmental affairs within the greater Texas area. Elise Hu’s “Stump Interrupted” video series is yet another innovative facet of the Tribune’s journalistic approach. The “Stump” series has featured a variety of Texas politicians including Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, Governor Rick Perry, and gubernatorial candidate Bill White.
Editor-in-chief and CEO Evan Smith’s blog post gives a few more details, who says the staff – rightfully so – is “psyched.”

Any word from Evan or the street on their cash flow situation?
Exactly what I was thinking, freep. They’ve been successful at getting noticed, both critically and otherwise. Hopefully that will translate into success for their business model.
Perhaps you should have mentioned that The Dallas Morning News also won a Murrow award.
Why would I do that, when the post is about the Tribune?
Well done, TT.
