Miami Leaders Diss North Texas Super Bowl Efforts

Our man in Miami reports that South Florida Super Bowl organizers did a little trash-talking about North Texas leaders at a press conference on Monday.

Rodney Barreto, who is heading up the Super Bowl XLIV Host Committee, said that eight months ago he got a call from Arlington’s mayor, who told him the North Texas host committee was in “a bit of disarray” because there was too much turf warfare going on among competing government entities. Barreto said he advised Cluck to “get all the politicians off the committee, and let the [convention and visitors bureau] handle it.”

At that, Nicki Grossman, of the Fort Lauderdale CVB, chimed in:  “If North Texas is consumed by bureaucrats and small-minded thinking, they’ll never get another Super Bowl.”

I just got off the phone with Robert Cluck, the mayor of Arlington. I asked about what he said to Barreto.  He responded, “I didn’t make that call. I’ve never heard of him.”

How the Media Party at the Super Bowl

Miami sand sculpture 2 Our woman in Miami this week passes along photos (including this one of a Mount Rushmore of football sculpted out of sand) from last night’s Super Bowl XLIV media party, which by some accounts failed to impress. It was on a beach. There was a mechanical bull, and some sort of bean bag toss. What was not to like?

The North Texas Super Bowl XLV Host Committee really wants next year’s game to be the first of many NFL championships played here. How well the game itself is pulled off is just one part of the equation. The hosts have got to make sure the team owners and NFL brass have their needs met. And they’ve got to ensure that the media–which will be distributing stories about our region all across the world–have a good time as well.

Much of the media contingent will be staying at the Sheraton. Need we be concerned?

Matt Chandler’s Battle

We first told you about Village Church pastor Matt Chandler undergoing brain surgery in December. This article gives you the whole story and a bit of an update on him. His tumor was diagnosed at Stage 3 (Stage 4 being the most aggressive).

The average life expectancy in such cases, Barnett says, is approximately two to three years. The doctor says later, in an interview, he believes Chandler will live longer because of the aggressive surgery, treatment and Chandler’s otherwise good health.

The father of three is receiving treatment at Baylor University Medical Center, and it sounds like he’s taking everything in stride. But don’t take my word for it, read the article.

Local Hospital Officially Limits Elective Delivery

North Hills Hospital in North Richland Hills is trying to cut back on the number of elective deliveries for pregnant women at fewer than 39 weeks. It’s interesting, but I’m mainly posting this because I want an excuse to quote a mother who described her baby— born at 40 weeks—as “puffy and juicy and nice and ripe.”

DFW Expects Doubling of Corporate Plane Traffic

Yesterday the DFW Airport staff outlined their plan to renovate the old American Eagle terminal to become the new home for general aviation traffic there. Those planes are now being routed to a temporary building that sits essentially in a parking lot where someday–far down the road, apparently–a Terminal F may be built.

The $3 million project, with about $2 million for a road to reach the terminal and another $1 million for renovations to the building, is expected to be completed this fall, according to what Jeff Fegan, the airport’s CEO told me a couple weeks ago. This is getting done ahead of Super Bowl XLV, which promises to bring hundreds of corporate and private planes to the region.

But Fegan assured me the project isn’t being undertaken merely for this one big event next February. “It’ll be a long-term investment. The forecast showed a doubling of corporate aviation at DFW after this facility is open and after [the Super Bowl] takes place.”

DFW is the second closest airport to Cowboys Stadium, after Arlington Municipal. (more…)

Trend Report: Cosmetic Dentistry Takes Downturn in DFW

I can only assume that people in Dallas aren’t getting their teeth whitened and straightened as often as they were before the economy went into the tank. I make this assumption based on the following lawsuit:

Cowboys Stadium LP
v.
Dallas Center for Cosmetic Dentistry PA
2/2/2010 352-243435-10
Defendant agreed to pay $2.1 million a year to lease six Cowboys Stadium suites for 20 years. Defendant backed out of the deal by refusing to pay the first year’s rent. Plaintiff seeks the entire $42 million owed under the lease.

At one point, apparently, the Dallas Center for Cosmetic Dentistry was doing well enough to commit $42 million to watching Cowboys games. But now? Not so much. What’s next? Plastic surgeons pulling out of their contracts, too? The horror.

State Rep. Terri Hodge Pleads Guilty

The only surprise, I guess, is that she waited this long to strike a deal with prosecutors. The lead from the DMN:

State Rep. Terri Hodge, D-Dallas, pleaded guilty early this morning to lying on her tax returns in connection with the FBI’s Dallas City Hall public corruption investigation, an act that ends her 14-year political career.

Prosecutors agreed to drop the bribery charges. Seems like a good deal for Hodge, to me.

Dredging Up Dirt on the Stoneleigh Purchase and More

Tim, I posted the good news (and price) yesterday afternoon – that a division of Carrollton-based Centurion American Development called CTMGT LLC beat out Jonas Woods to buy up the shell of the Stoneleigh Heritage Residences out of bankruptcy.  Hoping to talk to the new owners later today so stay tuned… but the real buzz on DallasDirt seems to be, will the internet make Dallas Realtors extinct?

Hensarling vs. Obama, Ctd.

A spokesman for U.S. Rep. Jeb Hensarling gave me a hard time (in a gentle, friendly way) for linking to a biased take from the left in my post about the feud between the Dallas congressman and the president. He sent me a list of a number of conservative commentators who have jumped to Hensarling’s defense.

I only linked to the Daily Show clip because I thought it was funny. Jon Stewart wasn’t delivering an honest, straightforward accounting of the discussion. I left that to Factcheck.org.

But it’s a decent point, so here’s the first link off the list from Hensarling’s office: some guy named Rush Limbaugh.

Since he’d brought it up, I asked the spokesman what he thinks about Factcheck.org and their findings. (They said that Hensarling told “a Texas-sized whopper” and was giving the GOP full credit for budgets from the Clinton Administration–when America was in a sustained economic boom, running surpluses, and before the Bush tax cuts). He called Factcheck.org “good guys,” but said they missed the point.

Did Mayor Leppert Get His Convention Numbers Wrong?

Yesterday I told you, with the help of a trusted FBvian who was in attendance, that at a speech to the Dallas Assembly, Mayor Tom Leppert said that as a result of the recently concluded meeting in Dallas of the Professional Convention Management Association, 30 new conventions have been booked in Dallas, with a value of $65 million. The numbers seemed high to me. I asked the folks at the CVB to verify them. Phyllis Hammond, the VP of PR there, said she wasn’t at the speech and punted to Chris Heinbaugh, the mayor’s chief of staff. Here’s what Heinbaugh said:

I was not at the event [yesterday] morning and I don’t know what was said or that the Mayor was heard correctly. But I can tell you the figures he’s been using since PCMA: Bookings are very strong. Omni says they already have $13 million in bookings and about another $50 million in the pipeline, and that was before PCMA. Also, the DCVB says they have booked 4 major citywide conventions (the really big ones) with an estimated economic impact of $72 million. 6 to 7 more citywides in the pipeline for just this quarter.

Now, the FBvian who attended the speech yesterday is not a working journalist. But I know him to be a trustworthy fellow. And he was taking notes. I’ve asked the Dallas Assembly folks if they have videotape of the speech. I’ll determine with certainty what the mayor said. But bottom line: 30 new conventions haven’t been booked since the PCMA meeting here.

Update: The Dallas Assembly folks tell me they didn’t videotape the speech, and they referred me back to Chris Heinbaugh. It appears the wagons are circled. To put it charitably, then, Mayor Leppert misspoke at the luncheon — and it was a pretty gross error in misspeaking.

Leading Off (2/3/10)

1. You want to know how far the Cowboys have fallen since their glory years? Yesterday Cowboys fullback Deon Anderson was arrested. You know what for? Outstanding traffic warrants. No hookers were involved. No sex toys. No drugs. Just pathetic.

2. Dallas will be extra fabulous for the next few days. A convention of 2,000 gay and lesbian activists begins today at the Sheraton. The sound you hear is cash registers ringing on Cedar Springs.

3. Remember the Heritage at the Stoneleigh condo development that went into bankruptcy? A developer named Mehrdad Moayedi bought the property and plans to finish the project and turn it into a high-end orphanage for Haitian children. (Not really.)
