Nite Davis, owner of the now-defunct X-treme Championship Wrestling, waxes poetic about the close of his Denton County show:
“Wrestling is not what it was. The heart is missing, and the atmosphere has changed,” Davis said. “There are not enough bloodthirsty fans or bloodthirsty guys [wrestlers]. … The bland factor is disheartening.”

Or we can watch real violence in a real fight (i.e., UFC) instead of fake violence that takes place according to a script! I actually think that society is more bloodthirsty now and a fake show like wresting just doesn’t do it for most people.
JS, I disagree that MMA is more violent than Nite Davis’ brand of wrestling.
XCW was a hardcore wrestling promotion. If you’ve seen The Wrestler, it’s one that does stuff like that second match in the movie. If you haven’t, well, then what you should imagine is less the sort of mainstream wrestling, and more barbed wire and blood. It’s far more bloodthirsty than most professional wrestling, and definately moreso than MMA.
MMA is violent, but they’re not choking each other with barbed wire and slamming each other onto light tubes and shattered glass. The outcome is predetermined, but make no mistake, when you see a guy landing on broken glass and barbed wire, those aren’t fake props and that’s not fake blood coming from the wounds on his back.

Gee, I am sorry I missed out on XCW. Oh well, anyone know where I can watch a good pit bull fight? Or perhaps a venue where we can throw people to the lions for our fun and amusement?
