An alert FrontBurnervian points us to the below video, created by the smart folks at the NYT. It shows the source of traffic to their website on the day Michael Jackson died. Notice the red hotspot in North Texas.

Ugh. This Dallas “story” is overblown. First of all, NYTimes readers are not required to register for all content, so the desktop traffic (i.e. yellow) has been determined by the users’ domains. My company’s domain is registered in Timbuktu, WY, so my “location” is from that state. Likewise, my home ISP’s domain is registered in Virginia. Guess where the NYTimes thinks I live?
The raw phone data MIGHT be more accurate, but you have to consider that our Metropolitan Complex is a major airport and business hub. Who know the composition of residents vs. transients?
For those of you buying ad media on the Web, never, EVER trust traffic figures unlees it has been verfied by a third party. The NYTimes used their Web server log files to determine the traffic here, sources tell me.
The Dallas connection and suprise described here and in the comments section is misleading.

I read the NYT for breaking news stories because DNM’s pop-up ads attack me everytime I visit their site, and it takes me 10 minutes to get to the actual story I wanted to read. By then another story has broken, and I’m back to square one. I hate the DMN website.
