Judge Carlos Cortez Writes Nasty Notes

About other judges. Of course, the really sad thing is that what he writes is probably true.

  1. Sure. And a quick look at the Dallas Bar Judicial Poll suggests that Cortez efficiently pushes his rulings out — though they may not be impartial or based on a thorough knowledge of the law, and nearly half of the lawyers rating him think that over, he needs some improvement. And of course, more than half don’t think he shows proper judicial temperament and demeanor.

  3. wasn’t he the one fighting in the courthouse with another judge a while back?

  4. Who exactly is Randy Johnston? What motive does he have to file the complaints?

  5. My dog would be a better judge, and he’s a pretty average dog.

  6. Some would suggest that this is the inevitable result of electing a judiciary. Others would say that it could be worse, as proved by the judge in Dallas County Court at Law No. 1.

  9. Cortez could set fire to an empaneled jury, extinguish the flames with bear urine, and then take a ten week vacation, and STILL be much better than D’Metria Benson in Ct 1.

  10. I think judges who call out other judges for sleeping on the bench is what we all want in our judiciary. A refreshing change and a breath of fresh air.

  11. @Voter — Cortez’s statement that some other judge falls asleep “also on the bench apparently” is classic weasling. That “apparently” qualifier indicates that either he doesn’t know whether it actually happens, or that he’s making it up and knows better than to state it as a fact, which would be actionable.

Making qualified quasi-accusations that you don’t really have to justify or verify is neither a change nor a breath of fresh air. It’s more like cowardly, bullying rumor mongering.

  12. D’Metria Benson is the worst most incompetent judge I have seen serve in Dallas County in my 25 years of service and I’m a proud Democrat. I have had about 4 cases in her court and she sends cases off into orbit with the most ridiculous case monitoring system imaginable. Basically, she punishes lawyers for her own snail like consideration of pending matters by forcing them to report to Court every month or so to explain to the Clerk that the lawyer is waiting on her to rule on pending matters. Then when she rules she shows lack of legal knowledge on the most elementary issues-ones you’d expects a 2nd year legal student to know. Any client with a case in her Court should consider a dismissal w/o prejudice because attorney’s fees will be astronomical.

  13. Better to be sleeping on the bench than “sleeping with the enemy.”

  14. I think Judge Cortez needs to concentrate on his own shortcomings (and there are MANY). He is a bully and I am POSITIVE if voters knew him personally he would NEVER win another election. He is rude, mean, and an overall lousy person. Who wants this type of person on the bench?

  15. Julie is right, he is a lot more than a bully as we are all about to find out. He was elected because he took advantage of the Hispanic community by presenting himself as one of them, which he is not, Spain is where his relatives live and where his mother is from. He preys on people. It is time those who truly know him speak up, he has no business being in a position to judge others, he has no business representing the law in any way.
