The whole thing made me this cynic feel all squishy inside. Didn't see that coming. Ms. Boyd is one skilled navigator, always plunging the depths of interviewees and their material.

Like billh, the "economic collapse" remark hit hard. Would have liked to have heard some stats. Like "retail relies on Christmas for 40% of its yearly sales." (Is that in the ballpark?) The fact of the matter is that the celebration of Christmas is going global, like in Japan. Stuever did point out that a great deal of the decorations/gifts are manufactured in China. What if the global economy is becoming dependent on this Consumerist Bacchanalia referred to as Christmas?

And will there still be enough money leftover for defense spending?

Can't think of any reason to look at the book except that Hank Stuever is only the GREATEST DAMN FEATURE WRITER on the face of the planet. Aside from that, meh.

I thought so too Rawlins.

I was bothered by the idea that simplicity in Christmas is an economic disaster.

Personally, I think the excess of this over the top consumer driven season is spiritually disastrous.

How others celebrate Christmas is really none of my business, but my family has opted out of the consumer driven season.

peace on earth, Rawlins
That doesn't mean, I won't buy you a drink though.

It was a great THINK hour. Hank was very earnest and clearly sensitive-intelligent, showing a knack balance between satire and affectionate insight, a peculiar vantage I found delicious.

Cheers and Merry Christmas to Hank, Krys and Jeff. Today's two-hour THINK was as good as Sunday's Indianapolis-New England game. I'm glad I missed neither.
