Leading Off (10/01/09)

1. Jerry Jones stays rich. Andrew Beal gets rich. And pretty much everyone else got a little bit poorer this past year, according to Forbes. I wonder if those in that last category are blue.

2. According to an article by Sue Shellenbarger at the Wall Street Journal, Dallas is the No. 9 place to live after college. Although the article touts Dallas’ highlights, there is one teeny sentence about its downsides. “Dallas lacks a reputation as a youth mecca, and summers can be very hot.” Oh, really? It’s hot? I never noticed.

3. An Arlington mother turned herself in for the death of her toddler, who was left in the car for eight hours while the mother was at work. When the mother finally took her son to the hospital, his body temp was 107. It’s a sad case. And it just reaffirms item No. 2’s evaluation of Dallas. Even late summer can be very hot.

  1. Not to diminish the horrible, horrible parenting going on in the third part of the post… but some of us *like* the heat. If it’s between shoveling snow off the front walk for three months (Chicago) or sweating off 10 percent of my body weight in the summer – well, who doesn’t like a sauna?

  2. That’s how Beal made his first fortune, buying up undervalued assets. But maybe the most interesting thing about the guy is his willingness to put it on the line in a game of cards. Read this great story we published in 2004 about the very media-shy billionaire.

  3. dallas gets heat for its heat, i get it…but the comment about Austin having a “cooler climate than the rest of Texas” is down right laughable.

Austin is more or less 5-10 degrees warmer than Dallas 9 out of 10 times I check. and the summer can often feel like you are living in a sauna…

  5. Yes, but you can always pay the neighborhood teenager to shovel snow off your front walk…Who can I hire to carry a portable air conditioner around with me for three months and have it cost the same?

  6. @ Becca

I keep hearing that illegal immigrants are here to do the jobs that nobody else will, so I’m sure one would follow your Yankee-ass around with an AC unit if need be.

  7. Item #3 makes me so angry. I recently had to go through hell and back to adopt a child – more than a year of waiting, two failed attempts, countless hours spent with social workers to evaluate whether I’m fit to parent and a vulgar sum of money paid. Based on the DMN story, I don’t get the feeling that this woman was ever required to take a parenting class or be studied in her home before having her five children.

As hard as I try, I just don’t get it sometimes…

  8. Glad to hear Dallas has no youth Mecca. I, for one, can do without many of the post college cretins which seem to invade many of this cities spots. Send them on the Austin, if need be! there are enough issues with the home grown post college kids.
