Is The TABC Out Of Control?, Ctd.

Chief Jeff Halstead of the Fort Worth PD has suspended joint operations with the TABC pending a review of the Rainbow Lounge assault. This is not the first incident we’ve heard about where TABC officers were out of control, and Fort Worth is not the only city that should review its joint operations (Hello, Irving? Hello, Dallas?).  And the TABC is not the first state agency to take its police powers beyond the limits that the Constitution allows. The Legislature is in session, albeit only for another day, but that’s enough time to order an independent report on the TABC’s misconduct. When I categorize this post as “crime” on the line below, I’m not talking about the patrons. I’m talking about the police — and that’s a danger that cannot be allowed.

Jessica Simpson Takes On The National Anthem; Anthem Wins

Jessica Simpson “sings” the National Anthem to open Tiger Woods’ AT&T National golf tournament in Bethesda, Md. “Spectators were not prepared for the incomprehensible shouts of Ms. Simpson as she ‘honored our country’ in a costume that would give Tim Burton nightmares.” That’s a quote from Trevor Scott, an 18-year-old journalism student who’s “shadowing” me here at the office today.

Leading Off (7/2/09)

1. Another effort to rename another city street after labor leader Cesar Chavez has been tabled. And again, I offer this compromise: Zachary L. Crain Pre-Memorial Parkway. If it helps, I sometimes get really tan in the summer.

2. Pvt. Zachary Boyd, the soldier memorably captured fighting the Taliban in pink boxers, will be home in North Texas for the Fourth of July weekend. If you see him around, buy him a beer. If you can’t find him, buy me a bourbon.

3. Over at InsideCorner, relive an exciting Rangers win over the first-place Angels, via Evan Grant’s live blog, or just skip to the end. Synergy!
