News of another high-profile exit comes from the DBJ, which reports that Lyssa Jenkens is leaving her post as chief economist at the Dallas Regional Chamber to work for the Dallas Women’s Foundation.
Dave Levinthal, a City Hall reporter for The Dallas Morning News, will pick up stakes and move to Washington, D.C., this summer. In a note to colleagues, he explained why:
Michelle received a most ridiculous offer to work at the National Institute of Health as a cancer immunologist, and of course, you know how I feel about wanting to work in D.C. So we’re pulling the trigger. It’s scary, unsettling and incredibly exciting. And I want you to hear it from me first before word gets around too much.
Michelle will leave at the end of June. I plan to stay in Dallas for a while longer, possibly into August, and continue working at the DMN until I move. I’ve only just begun looking for a new job, but I’m confident, despite the job market, that matters will work out.
Not sure how we all missed this, but the man who probably helped ignite the Feherty controversy says no apology necessary. Agreed.
As Tim noted, the Kimbell won’t cough up how much it paid for Michelangelo’s The Torment of St. Anthony. What we do know is that the Cowtown museum had an endowment of $350 million in February–down from $466 million last year–and that some of its previous acquisitions sent “shock waves” through the art community. (Like, when it ponied up $1.6 million for a 5th century B.C. vase back in 2000.) Art economist David Kusin, president of Dallas’ Kusin & Co., says private outfits like the Kimbell are under no requirement to disclose such info. Kusin himself declines to estimate Torment’s cost, but says it’s unlikely the Kimbell got the painting for a song, despite the recession. “Works of that scarcity are really not affected by momentary or seasonal changes in the macroeconomy,” he says.
Fighting the Taliban in I [HEART] NY boxers will make you famous.
The name is now official. No big surprise there. What I’d like to draw your attention to is the words that came out of Jerry Jones’ mouth at the announcement. From the DMN:
“Texas Stadium, we certainly have a deep embedded vision of what it is and at some point we will say was. But we’d like to keep it at that.”
I guess that could be a typo; if it changes on the DMN site, we’ll know. But I’d bet he actually said that. Anyone care to diagram that first sentence?
A sports-loving FrontBurnervian is dismayed that the DMN didn’t cover Bud Shrake’s funeral (though the paper did do his obit on Saturday). The FBvian points us to the American-Statesman’s piece. If you ever read Shrake’s work, you’ll want to read about the funeral. Sounds like yesterday’s service was a good one — if such a thing can be described that way.
Oh, I love happy endings. Addison is about to get a cool sign. We’re open for comments.
In a post a couple of months back, I made an offhand joke about the DMN site having 50 blogs. Later in the day, I heard from a Morning News employee who initially thought my number was ridiculous — it was a joke, after all — but then counted and found I wasn’t far off; dallasnews.com had 38 blogs.
Well, Eric just counted again (they’ve incorporated some community blogs recently) and my once-slight joke is 100 percent true. They now have 52 blogs. We apparently have to step our game up.
See, I know a couple of muckety-mucks at Oncor. The greatness of Chris Schein (Tulsa in the house!), former KERA maven (formerly a radio reporter, still a maven) Catherine Cuellar, etc. So what am I to think when I read that Oncor may be given 67 electric cars to test drive for three years? Free ride, baby.
1. Were Mavs fans harassing Kenyon Martin’s mom in the stands? Or did Carmelo Anthony’s fiancee’s bodyguard start the whole thing? Here’s video of LaLa Vazquez hitting a security guard! And don’t forget about Dirk’s stripper, Jade. Amazing continues to happen.
2. The Kimbell has acquired the earliest known painting by Michelangelo. The museum isn’t saying what it paid. What we do know: art dealer Adam Williams bought the painting last summer for $2 million, when it was unclear whether it was actually a Michelangelo. The Kimbell might have paid $70 million or more. Score.
3. Kimberly Shanks of Allen killed her husband when he turned up the volume on the Cowboys game. Have a look at her arrest photo. Would you describe that as a look of remorse?
A TV-watching FBvian points out that there’s another Texan on Dancing With The Stars–Ty Murray, the Stephenville rodeo cowboy and main squeeze of Jewel. Then adds:
When it comes to Texanness, I think Ty > Melissa.
Several things are keeping Dallas Fed economist Thomas F. Siems up at night. One’s the “huge debt burden” Washington is running up. Another’s the way the federal government is growing. (”The bigger government gets,” Siems says, “the smaller GDP gets.”) He’s also worried about over-regulating the banks–most of which, he says, are doing just fine–and, down the road, the probability of higher inflation. Siems made the comments in a keynote address this morning to the EO Dallas group at the Westin Galleria.

From my original DMN pen pal:
Well played.
