Josh at the Nelson: Good Night and Good Luck

It’s all over here at the Nelson – the golf, that is. I’m sure the parties will continue long into the night. We’ve had lots of low scores this week, some great weather and the emergence of a new trend in women’s style. Thank you, Tim, for letting a golf nerd attempt to cover this fantastic event from both angles. I hope the coverage on both FrontBurner and InsideCorner has been insightful and life-changing for all involved.

As for me, I’m leaving much fatter, slower, and more sunburned that I was when I got here on Thursday. And for that, I say thanks.

Josh at the Nelson: Traveling in Style

I promised a look at some of the player’s cars as seen in the player’s parking lot this week. I lost track of a red late model muscle car that was very sweet, but I managed to get shots of the two below. Enjoy.
Not sure who drives this beauty, but this 2 door, blacked out Bentley is my favorite of the week.

This is Hunter Mahan's ride (says a well-connected, golfy insider). This 2 door, blacked out Bentley is by far my favorite of the week.

Josh at the Nelson: Pink Is The New Black

If you are watching the tournament on television today, you will notice a lot of guys wearing pink shirts and pink ribbons in honor of Amy Mickelson, Phil’s wife who was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier in the week. The diagnosis caused Phil to withdraw from both the Nelson and the Colonial tournaments, and suspend his schedule indefinitely.

Robert Allenby, a PGA Tour player from Australia, is also wearing a pink shirt today, and will do so every Sunday this year. But, it’s not for Amy Mickelson. It’s for his own mother, who died in January from cancer. No jokes to be made here, just a silent tip of the hat to those who have lost loved ones and to those who’s loved ones continue to fight.

Josh at the Nelson: Fashion Ruling

I just noticed that one of my favorite all-time golfers, Fred Couples, is wearing short white socks with his navy blue golf slacks. Is this a party foul or something that I can start doing on my weekend rounds? Discuss.

In unrelated news, the first rain shower of the day has moved through. I have to say, golers in wet t-shirts is not the mental picture I wanted to leave here with.

Josh at the Nelson: Conditions Are Perfect

For those of you that are Flight of the Conchord fans, you will appreciate that lead in more than the general public. While those are lyrics to a very funny Conchords song, they are also great descriptors of the weather and course conditions at the Nelson today. Players are going low and the crowds are already swelling before noon. If the weather stays dry today this will be a fantastic final round of golf.

I’m heading to the range shortly to scope out the Money Group, who I anticipate will be local guy Rory Sabbatini and co-leader John Mallinger. I hate to cop out with my Money Group pick being the leaders, but with Sabbatini having a knack for flare and being a Ft. Worth resident, I think he’s the biggest draw today. I love Fred Couples, and my pick yesterday was spot on, so I don’t doubt that he will have a huge following today as well.

Also, per Tim’s request I will try to get more updates on the Maxi dress dominance of women’s Nelson fashion. So stay tuned for that and a player’s transportation update that you will not want to miss. Spoiler alert: the players make money and spend it on cars. Pictures will be included.

Josh at the Nelson: Off The Record at Lunch

I had lunch with several folks from the Golf Channel and CBS today. We were all having a good time talking golf and joking around. Good times were aplenty… until they asked where I worked. The next time someone spoke (several awkward moments later) a Golf Channel guy said, “You know everything you said just got quoted in print by the same magazine that got Feherty in hot water.” I tried to plead our case (and David’s) but to no avail. I left shortly thereafter. Thanks for ruining a good lunch, Tim.

Josh at the Nelson: Fashion and Festivities

I was just notified that the Pavilion After Dark series will now begin at 3 p.m. to accomodate the updated schedule out here today. Professor D will hit the stage around 3 p.m. and play until around 6. Please plan accordingly.

maxi_dressNow, on to more pressing matters. Ladies, I need a little help from you today. Thanks to a commentor over on InsideCorner, I became aware of a recent phenomenon known as the “Maxi dress”. I admit, I had to Google it to figure out what the heck it was. Once I did, however, I realized that I have seen it many, many times out here. Guys: see attached picture of the young lady on the left to see what I’m referring to.

Now, I am baffled by this attire. To me, it’s the equivalent of wearing a pair of Dickies overalls to a swim party. Maybe I’m just not up with the style, who knows. After all, my idea of fashionable is a pair of plaid shorts and a Jack Johnson t-shirt (preferrably with a picture of some banana pancakes on it).

So, help me out ladies. What’s the deal with wearing these full length, heavy dresses to a hot, humid, outdoor event? The phone lines are open and the comments are on… for now.

Josh at the Nelson: The Money Group

fred_couplesEvery day at the Nelson there is a group that garners the most attention and the majority of the “non-golf interested” crowds. I will hereby refer to this group as the Money Group. If you are heading out to the Nelson today you will probably want to catch up with group number 5, who went off the first tee at 8:50 this morning.

Players in this group are Charles Howell III, who is a young, good-looking (so I’m told) guy who dresses well and hits the ball a long way, Scott McCarron who is also a nice looking guy who has a solid golf game, and Fred Couples (headline attraction) who I overheard yesterday “Isn’t just hot and old, he’s hot because he’s old!” Freddy Couples is like the George Clooney of the PGA Tour, and I have to admit that even I have a bit of a man crush.

In fact, I’m heading out to the course right now to follow the Money Group and to check in on local golfers Matt Weibring and Colt Knost. If you’re coming out early to beat the weather, swing by and say hello. And bring me a canned mojito, will ya? I hear they’re really great.

Josh at the Nelson: Prepare to Adjust Your Saturday Schedules

We just received word from tournament officials that play tomorrow will be pushed up to avoid inclement weather that will move in during the afternoon hours. Players will play in threesomes (insert Pavilion joke here) instead of the normal weekend twosomes, and tee times will start at 7:30 a.m. Not sure how this is going to affect the Pavilion scene, but I don’t think things are going to be much fun when the intense thunderstorms and wind blow through. But, maybe that’s just how I roll. Other people might be into that sort of thing.

Consider yourself updated. Feel free to adjust your schedules, and wardrobes, accordingly.

Josh at the Nelson: Pavilion Update

Let’s just say the Pavilion is well on its’ way to being in full swing. It’s already difficult to find a lane to walk through, much less a spot to sit and hang out. It’s standing room only today and I seriosuly doubt there will be any celebrity sightings until Jack Ingram hits the stage at 8:30 tonight. Sadly, I will be unable to attend, but I’m sure our Nightlife section of the Web site will have plenty o’ pics from the event soon. Below are a few more shots from the Pavilion scene about 30 minutes ago. Enjoy.

Woman Scores Victory for Dallas Rape Victims

In March we told you about Courtney Underwood. The SMU grad had learned something peculiar about Dallas County: it has a policy that allows no hospital other than Parkland to provide admissible evidence in sexual assault cases. That didn’t make a whole lot of sense to Underwood, and she set out to change that policy. Thanks to her efforts, in October the county will do something it should have done years ago.

Josh at the Nelson: Sabbatini’s Style and Pic of Chicks

So, it’s the second day at the Nelson, and I’m still getting used to the “social” aspect of things out here. The following are observations that I wish to share with you:

1. Rory Sabbatini is representing a strong wardrobe with his selection of white pants, turquoise golf grips, and a purple checkerboard shirt (see pic below). To you, sir, I say, “Well played.”

2. I am continuing my quest to bring you snapshots of fellow spectators and media folks alike. My first submission for this category is below. Discuss. Or not.

3. I am deeply depressed with Anthony Kim’s decision to not bling it up today. I almost didn’t believe that it was him walking toward me on the first fairway because I wasn’t blinded when I looked at his crotch area. Don’t ask. Anthony, you are playing at the Nelson. If there is anywhere on the Tour that such attire is acceptable, nay appreciated, it’s here.

I’m heading to the Pavilion, so you can expect more submissions to my pictoral collage shortly. That is all.

Josh at the Nelson: Adam Scott Sighting

Not sure if you can tell from the picture but apparently defending champ Adam Scott isn’t letting a missed cut get in the way of his fun. This is one of the indoor courts at the Four Seasons Resort. Scouting report? Strong forehand, limited range, and a wild backhand. I think the hair is really in his way.

Dallas Bartender Dating Options to Expand

A friend recently joked that I spent so much time at a certain establishment that I was almost certainly common-law married to a bartender there. I wish. But I think being a bartender would be hard–you’re never home at night so you miss amazing shows; people are generally bad—but drunk people are worse; and trying to remember drink orders and recipes and all that business is just too much. Luckily, a lot of people don’t see it my way. According to this Dallas Morning News video, local bartending schools are experiencing a jump in enrollment, likely due to the uncertain economy. My favorite line here: “Your degree in this business is your smile.”

‘Uncollectable’ Funds Slam United Way

Back in February, we told you how the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas had exceeded its annual fundraising goal by raking in more than $58 million, despite the lousy economy. Well, turns out the economy took a toll after all. UW says that 12 percent of that $58 mil turned out to be “uncollectable,” leading to a nearly 4 percent decrease in investment funds compared to the previous year’s campaign. Even so, the group has now doled out nearly $45 million collected in the latest drive, to groups like the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas and the Bridge Breast Network.
