Attorney Bill Holston contributed to the cover story story of the June issue of the “print product.” He wrote Reason No. 6 why we love Dallas, “Because We Protect the Rights of Humans.” He does pro bono work for the Dallas-based Human Rights Initiative. In writing to thank us for allowing him the opportunity to publicize the work of the group (and, really, it was our honor), he shared a story about the most recent asylum seeker he helped. I thought it was worth sharing:
It’s possible that Dallas-based AT&T unfairly swayed the voting that made Kris Allen this year’s American Idol. That’s what The New York Times is reporting, anyway.
There’s no PR jihad by the Rockefeller family against the company’s leadership, as there was in 2008. As of 8:40 this morning there wasn’t a protester in sight. And chief agitator Robert Monks admitted to CNBC that he’s “not going to get a majority of votes today” to try once again to split Exxon Mobil’s chairman and CEO roles. No matter; national attention is paid every year to the Irving-based company’s annual shareholder meeting at the Meyerson–even when not that much unusual is happening. Main reason: it’s always in vogue to report about folks beating up on Exxon Mobil. Last I checked, the company earned $4.6 billion in the first quarter; so, remind me again what’s not working?
1. Hey, San Antonio. You know what? Looks like you’re the big city with the highest crime rate in the country. Dallas is now No. 2 — which maybe doesn’t sound that awesome. But crime is down in Dallas 17.5 percent through April. Go, Kunkle! Go, Kunkle! Get your badge on!
2. Oh. Except there was that carjacking at gunpoint in Northwest Dallas. And the two bodies found this morning in an abondoned car in East Oak Cliff. And …
3. A FrontBurnervian needs your help. She lives off Lovers Lane in the Ridgewood Park neighborhood, which yesterday was the site of some pretty serious — and mysterious — police activity. The cops wouldn’t tell her what happened, and there’s been nothing on the news. Her tale is after the jump. If you have info, share it in the comments.
