Josh at the Nelson: Fashion and Festivities

I was just notified that the Pavilion After Dark series will now begin at 3 p.m. to accomodate the updated schedule out here today. Professor D will hit the stage around 3 p.m. and play until around 6. Please plan accordingly.

maxi_dressNow, on to more pressing matters. Ladies, I need a little help from you today. Thanks to a commentor over on InsideCorner, I became aware of a recent phenomenon known as the “Maxi dress”. I admit, I had to Google it to figure out what the heck it was. Once I did, however, I realized that I have seen it many, many times out here. Guys: see attached picture of the young lady on the left to see what I’m referring to.

Now, I am baffled by this attire. To me, it’s the equivalent of wearing a pair of Dickies overalls to a swim party. Maybe I’m just not up with the style, who knows. After all, my idea of fashionable is a pair of plaid shorts and a Jack Johnson t-shirt (preferrably with a picture of some banana pancakes on it).

So, help me out ladies. What’s the deal with wearing these full length, heavy dresses to a hot, humid, outdoor event? The phone lines are open and the comments are on… for now.

  3. The prison doors have been thrown open! The shackles have been pried off our wrists and ankles! It’s like Narnia when the snow melted!

And the post we get to comment on is . . . two chicks wearing long dresses to the Byron?!

O the cruelty of the D Overlords!

  5. It’s the economy: hemlines go down with the markets, same thing happened in the 1970’s after the mini-skirts in the ’60s!

  6. Candace, why do they go down? Do ladies stop shaving? Is the black dress on the right a maxi too? I like the idea of the “little black maxi”.

  14. We developed a code over the weekend. “MDA”
for Maxi Dress Alert… it got to be a joke! “MDA, twelve O’clock!”

There were everywhere. Yes, they are cute on some, but not everyone. And if you are going to wear one.. make sure the fabric is breathable. I know some of those faux fabrics like Rayon or Microfiber had to be HOT! Plus, if you are constantly lifting your skirt up or carrying it to walk around… it is too long! Ugh. There were so many it just gave me tired head.

And I know the guys did not like them. ;)

  15. It’s airy….And it covers a lot of items that one might not want to advertise ie. cellulite, veins, fat etc. Then again, that is not usually a worry among the Barbies at the Byron…You’ve got me…?

  17. Maxi dresses are not heavy and hot. They’re lighter and airier than wearing hot shorts that make you sweat around your waistline (among other places.) And as much as you guys think we only dress for you, that’s not true for most women, so it doesn’t matter if “guys did not like them.” (Besides, they’re feminine and flowy; what guy wouldn’t like that?) While a maxi dress doesn’t flatter everyone, on some it’s one of the prettiest things to wear. Get used to these for the next couple of years; they’re here to stay.

  18. I was thinking the other day that the maxi dress is just the spring/summer version of the Juicy track suit.

Question for some of the girls- why wear a long dress on a day that has rain?? It rained for 10-15 min on Sunday at the course. And the mud and soppy grass was just gross. I can’t even imagine wearing a dress that’s a giant shamwow.

  20. I don’t really care for this trend myself, as it is only really flattering on those that are tall or when worn formally, as an evening look. In my opinion “maxi” or “patio” dresses should not be worn to casual events. On the other hand, they are comfortable and do hide what you don’t want to show…so I can see why they are so popular.
