Moncrief’s Jab At Obama Administration

Mayor Mike Moncrief’s Fort Worth may be in for some big dough from the “stimulus” package. And Moncrief’s history in partisan political races may be as a Democrat. But that didn’t keep the mayor from telling us the other day that his “fiscal conservative side” is “very concerned” about the Obama administration. Said Moncrief of the new president’s approach: “It almost seems like it’s, ‘Ready. Shoot. Aim.’”

Scrap of History Found At SMU

The DMN’s Michael Young has a nice story about a seemingly insignificant scrap of paper that turned up in a file at SMU’s DeGolyer Library. By “turned up,” I mean a researcher found it while working on a book about early Texas currency and credit. And by “seemingly insignificant,” I mean not at all insignificant: the scrap is described as the “missing link” that helps piece together what happened in the first days of the Republic of Texas. Here’s the part of the post where I should recite everything I remember from Texas History in grade school. And by “everything,” I mean “anything,” but I didn’t do so well in that class. Apparently.

Leading Off (3/2/09)

1. The fancy new Whole Foods in Lakewood opens this morning with a ceremonial bread-breaking at 9:30 a.m. (I believe it’s a 7-foot loaf of challah.) I went there on Friday with the girls. It’s nice. Still, the misanthrope in me — which is to say, me — wishes they’d pulled up stakes and left the decaying husk of the old Minyard’s there, just as a double-guns to some of the self-important neighborhood folks who made them “reconsider” the original, awesome design.

2. When Jean-Jaques Taylor starts making sense — yes, the Cowboys did overpay for Jon Kitna, unless they were hurting for someone to lead pre-game Bible study — you know things are bad in Jerry World. Speaking of, I took a spin around the new stadium on Sunday morning, since I was in the area. Two-word prediction for future Sunday mornings involving the stadium: traffic apocalypse.

3. And finally, 147 guns were turned in on Saturday morning at Reunion Arena as part of a gun buyback put together by councilman Dwaine Caraway. I’m sure Trey Garrison will post a link to his take in the comments at some point, if you’re interested. Along with a quote from Office Space that Tim may or may not delete.
