1. The fancy new Whole Foods in Lakewood opens this morning with a ceremonial bread-breaking at 9:30 a.m. (I believe it’s a 7-foot loaf of challah.) I went there on Friday with the girls. It’s nice. Still, the misanthrope in me — which is to say, me — wishes they’d pulled up stakes and left the decaying husk of the old Minyard’s there, just as a double-guns to some of the self-important neighborhood folks who made them “reconsider” the original, awesome design.
2. When Jean-Jaques Taylor starts making sense — yes, the Cowboys did overpay for Jon Kitna, unless they were hurting for someone to lead pre-game Bible study — you know things are bad in Jerry World. Speaking of, I took a spin around the new stadium on Sunday morning, since I was in the area. Two-word prediction for future Sunday mornings involving the stadium: traffic apocalypse.
3. And finally, 147 guns were turned in on Saturday morning at Reunion Arena as part of a gun buyback put together by councilman Dwaine Caraway. I’m sure Trey Garrison will post a link to his take in the comments at some point, if you’re interested. Along with a quote from Office Space that Tim may or may not delete.

Need Iphone Skin. Need Iphone Skin.
Done.
Thanks. I feel so powerful.
To his credit, Trey showed up. It showed that even when people will ‘agree to disagree,’ they can still get along.
And no, we did not hug it out like E & Ari Gold but it’s all good.
You’re embarrassed about the hug, aren’t you Michael?

OK, so I don’t get these Leading Off posts. At first, you all were linking to the DMN almost exclusively (14 of 16 links at one point, as I pointed out on Feb. 19).
Now, the numbers are way down. You’ll post links to other news outlets’ sites even when their stories aren’t as complex or up-to-date.
Heck, you won’t even post a DMN link when when a DMN columnist says something with which you agree. Instead, you post a link to his column as reprinted on the Detroit Free Press.
If I had the ego of Tim Rogers, I would naturally assume that I was responsible for this shift in philosophy after my comment on Feb. 19. But I know that I’m not. I’m just throwin’ it out there…
@RayRay: The world is a mysterious place.
Leave the decaying husk of Minyard’s? That would be too good for them. They should be hung by their ankles until they swell up yeller as corn an’ burst!
RayRay – deep cleansing breaths. Good air in, bad air out.
Don’t forget JKidd becoming only the fourth player with 10,000 assists. (He’ll be at least second before his career is over.) However, I have no comment on this article.
Yeah but the number of points per game that Devin is averaging with the Nets is very similar to the number of downright bad tattoos he’s gotten since he got traded.
Judging by his new ink, he’s taken to New Jersey life like a duck to water.
Michael, Trey, help me here: I don’t understand the logic behind the buy-back. Do you really think criminals are going to turn in their guns? (Did they?) And most vitally, any there that do not ruin your manicure when you load the magazine?
Much greener to reuse/remodel an old building than to blow it up and start over. I’m glad it worked out that way despite my distaste for Lakewood tsk-tsk-ers.
STAY HARD and REST IN PEACE

@ Steve: Agreed.
I still cant believe i was MVR at Fridays game. the elvis wig always helps.
Re: WF – every parking space for blocks around Lakewood was taken. Some of us actually had to practice what we preach about walkability. Good news – you can only carry so much home that way.
Inside the store, you could not move more than a few feet without seeing a PTA lady (they were in clusters), somebody’s mother, somebody’s grown kid, or somebody from your class at the shrine. To boot there were a lot of interesting strangers/newcomers: I had no idea that the beautiful room could open a Lakewood chapter.
The prize of the day was the Lakewood Theater t-shirt for $9.99. A portion goes to keep the neon burning and the original twinkling ball of Dallas glowing. Most of us were loading up on them for gifts.
I got to know the hilarious Henry Minyard (wWw ‘30) before he passed and I would have loved to have heard his thoughts today.
Zac,
As one of the neighborhood officers who attended many a meeting during the planning stages, you should know it was WF who chose to forgo the new structure based on a “business decision”. Indeed, with a couple individual exceptions, the neighborhood associations offered broad support for WF’s original design and were united to help WF manage the process of getting through zoning quickly.
Please discontinue reinforcing this myth.
I attended the grand opening and the new store is terrific, a huge win for all East Dallas.
Well, Candy, since they only check serial numbers, it is a great place to have your granny turn in that piece you fired in that bank robbery back in the day.
@SIN: Wasn’t directed at you, but at the “couple individual exceptions.” I have heard and understand WF’s reasoning. And I buy it. Sort of. I do think everything has been swept under the rug because they went for the greener option.
But, sure, I won’t mention it anymore.
@ Zac,
To be fair, the “individual exeptions” deeply love Lakewood and East Dallas, and a couple of them were instrumental in the 1980s in protecting Lakewood Shopping Center from its post war suburban flight decline (see Gaston Ave).
The same attitudes regarding heroic efforts to save a neighborhood’s unique structures and character are not necessarily the same as what new urbanists would like to see as the area has been renewed.
I am disappointed we don’t have a second story patio cafe overlooking the golf course, but the new store absolutely delivers on the promise of natural abundance, which is a great thing. See you there often.
@ SIN: Not disagreeing with that either, necessarily. I do think the people in question could have approached it much better. Because some of the quotes I recall seeing at the time weren’t phrased as gently or sensibly as your take.
And yeah: My wife is glad it’s there, in whatever form.
Nothing says sustainability like “a second story patio cafe overlooking the golf course”!
Can you hit the WF from the driving range?
Bobby you can if you are facing the wrong direction. Not that I am encouraging that sort of thing…but we do have an increasing number of people with what I call the “SMU Fraternity Rush Pose” standing around trying to look superior at the 4th of July Parade.
You know, beer in one hand and other hand in pocket – acting a bit stand-offish. I went to SMU and we Lakewood types made fun of them…then.
For the rest of you, Bobby Ewing was run over in the driveway Pam Ewing’s house on Westlake in Lakewood http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=6733+westlake+dallas+texas+75214&sll=32.823814,-96.745455&sspn=0.008745,0.016501&g=6731+westlake+dallas+texas+75214&ie=UTF8&ll=32.823814,-96.745391&spn=0.008745,0.016501&t=h&z=16&iwloc=addr&layer=c&cbll=32.822299,-96.745434&panoid=IaG_bNFVYcfXToNx7uZ1aA&cbp=12,67.06671344968558,,0,5 But fortunately he returned.
