Dallas Opera Open Casting Call

I’m posting the following press release after the jump to help spread the word for the Dallas Opera, but mostly because it contains the word “supernumeraries.” That right there is a swell word. Note: I’m assuming the opera is looking for someone to portray a eunuch, not an actual eunuch. Though actual eunuchs have an obvious advantage. In this circumstance, at least.

FrontBurner For Your Ears at 3 pm

Adam and I are right now having our “show prep” meeting (pictured) for FrontBurner For Your Ears. Join us at 3 p.m., won’t you? Gordon Keith will be here to talk funny words with his mouth. If you’re so inspired, you may even call in and ask a question or make a witty comment. The guest line is 646-929-1614 (the show will go 30 minutes today, so perhaps we’ll take calls toward the end). Enjoy!
Update: What you got yourself now is a podcast that you can listen to at your leisure. I blame Gordon for making it the longest show in the history of the Internet.

i2 Does Good

A couple of days ago, I linked to a blogger’s item about ridiculous CEO perks that included Dallas-based i2 Technologies. Unbeknownst to be (but beknownst to the kind FrontBurnervian who knownsted me), the CEO ridiculed has long since left the company. So, for i2 karmic balance, I feel compelled to point out i2 Technologies posted a 2008 fourth-quarter profit of $21.4 million, 200 percent better than the fourth quarter in the year prior. Nice.

More Bad News At The Star-Telegram

(Thanks to the FBvian who posted this in comments. It’s worth moving upfront.) The memo follows after the jump:

Bald Eagle Spotted at White Rock Lake

If you are a local birder, you have probably already visited Dallas photographer J. R. Compton’s website. If you haven’t, the time is now—J.R. has documented his sighting of a bald eagle at White Rock Lake. Read about it here. See more photos here .

While I have you here, let me tell you about the Trinity River Audubon Center’s Free Third Thursday program. Who doesn’t like night hikes! (Hi, CR.)

D on WRR

If you’re down near One Arts today, stop by the WRR Music Lounge (near the 7-Eleven) for the live broadcast we’re doing. Meet Adriana Bate! Listen to Booker T. students perform (pictured)! Eat free food from Jorge’s!

Dallas Observer Pumping Web Numbers?

Ed Kohler says that Village Voice Media is manipulating Digg to inflate their web traffic numbers for advertisers. Local advertisers, of course, don’t benefit from traffic that isn’t local, but rarely are sophisticated enough to ask where the high numbers are coming from. Of course, the scheme backfires when Dallas advertisers don’t get any response from all those people in LA and Minneapolis. So in the end, it probably damages the brand more than it helps it.

Bernie Madoff’s Customer List Now Public

Thanks to a filing by the Dallas offices of lawfirm AlixPartners, we can peek at the 162-page customer list of accused Ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff. Celebrities include Larry King and Sandy Koufax. Also included, Madoff’s lawyer. Awwwwkwaaaard.

Land The Plane Just Like Cap’n Sully!

From our Department of Indirect Local News Ties comes the following online game, which allows hacks like you to attempt to be a hero like Capt. C.B. “Sully” Sullenberger without getting your britches soaked. Let’s just hope no terriers terrorists get a hold of this game and use it for training for future, devious plots.

Belo (The Broadcaster) Does Better Than Estimates

Belo suffered only a 9 percent decline in revenue in the 4th quarter, which these days passes as very good news. Yes, the loss looks dismal because of impairment write-offs and other charges, but EBITDA came in at 35 percent for the year.

Gordon Keith To Be Attacked on FrontBurner For Your Ears

For those who don’t know, Gordon Keith, of Ticket fame, was attacked live on the air by a guy named Nasty Nestor while Gordon was broadcasting from the Super Bowl last. Today at 3 p.m., Gordon will join us FrontBurner For Your Ears to discuss the harrowing event. Also, we’ll talk about why his TV show was cancelled and, in a related note, what he’s going to do with all those expensive jeans he owns.

Bill Brewer Likes Him Some Fancy Suits

On the back page of the Personal Journal section today, there appears a story headlined “Inside a Bastion of Old-School Power Attire.” The story is about how the recession is making even junior lawyers rethink their corporate casual attire. Really, though, the piece reads like a Match.com ad for Brewer and how handsome he his, how shiny his shoes are, etc. So good on Brewer’s PR man. He earned his keep. But to Christina Binkley, author of the story, I’d say, Don’t you think it would have been fair to mention how the formal-dress culture at Bickel & Brewer has affected the firm’s billings? And how do Brewer’s suits (the bespoke kind) perform for his clients in the courtroom? IJS.

Teresa Says N9NE is Closed

We are waiting for Wade.

Kay Bailey Using Stimulus Package As Campaign Tool?

Holly LaFon doesn’t like how the good senator is wedging Texas gubernatorial politics into the bill. I can guess that 99 other senators are doing little wedging of their own, just as 435 representatives tried to do in the House. That’s no excuse, but it is how Madison devised the system, as a “constant battle among interests.”  And that’s what makes the system so difficult to navigate in times of emergency, especially when big bucks are in play.

Leading Off (2/5/09)

1. The Dallas County jail: still not great.

2. Dan Reeves: still not working for the Cowboys.

3. Troy Aikman: still living at 4425 Highland Drive, even though he just bought the property next door from embattled developer Brian Potashnik.
