Instead of lunching at my desk, like usual, I tagged along with a protest-loving FBvian for a demonstration in honor of National Freedom to Marry Day at the Records Building downtown. It was more eventful than a trip to Whole Foods, I’ll tell you that. The takeaway: a same-sex couple still can’t get a marriage license in the state of Texas. Jump if you want the full (tense) report and more pics.

Lone Star Park’s just announced the live opening-weekend entertainment for its spring Thoroughbred season: the Randy Rogers Band (Randy’s from Cleburne) on April 10, and The Beach Boys on April 11. Which is reason enough to dish up Rogers’ best song: “One More Goodbye.” Just in time for Valentine’s Day, too–even if there is a whole lot of home-wreckin’ goin’ on in this video. Don’t worry; they get together in the end.
The Strange Boys were just getting really interesting when they left Dallas for Austin. But since the father of two members of the band is Bob Sambol (of Bob’s Steak & Chop House), we can still claim them, I suppose. The band has a new record coming out via super-cool label In the Red on March 24 called The Strange Boys…And Girls Club. To get you ready for it, check out “Heard You Wanna Beat Me Up”

An alert FBvian snapped this shot in the West Village Borders. It was taken in the “Religion” section of the Children’s area of the store. Curious.
Click “play” at 2 p.m. Then hold on to your sports pants, folks!
I am told by a FrontBurnervian with an eye on the Lege that State Rep. Terri Hodge — who is under indictment and whose legal proceedings will commence at the conclusion of this session — was just given a House committee assignment. She’ll be on the Criminal Jurisprudence Committee. Making a joke at this point would be too easy so I’ll just say, “Congrats, Ms. Hodge.”
I’m a tad late on this, but Belo8’s Cynthia Izaguirre is still seeking your input. Should she, or should she not, roll those R’s when pronouncing her Ecuadorian last name? After that’s settled, she’ll tackle world peace.
True enough, Zac and I will be drinking drinks and talking sports at 2 p.m. We will chat about all things Mavericks and touch on a few general NBA topics. Please let us know if you have specific questions to ask. And, Todd, yes, we will be talking Kidd-Harris trade. I’ll mention that you were right, I was wrong.
Anyone? Beuller? Beuller?
The Amarillo Globe-News reports that the Mary E. Bivins Foundation is suing the Highland Credit Strategies Fund and Dallas-based Highland Capital Management to reclaim the nearly $2 million it invested in the fund three years ago. Back then, the fund’s shares were worth about $20 each, the suit alleges. A quick check this morning indicates its shares are worth $5.71 each. What exactly does the Amarillo-based foundation do? It funds nursing homes. Arg.
Josh Hixson with People Newspapers has the information, including tapes of the 911 calls. The cops have closed their murder investigation, but many questions remain.
Park Cities People’s Josh Hixson has more on the 911 calls made by Jeanmarie Geis before her death.
Last week on FrontBurner For Your Ears, Adam and I talked with Gordon Keith about all manner of stuff. Have a listen with the player below. Today we’re bringing you something a little different. While Adam is convalescing (don’t ask), Zac and Eric will handle broadcasting duties today. The show will be available on its usual channel, but Zac and Eric are renaming it. Last I heard, they were calling it Drinking Drinks and Talking Sports with Zac and Eric. I’m sure we’re all eager to hear what that sounds like.
1. Jermaine Jakes, the 29-year-old son of Bishop T.D. Jakes, has been accused of exposing himself in front of an undercover DPD vice detective a month ago at Kiest Park. I did a similar thing about a year ago, but it was just emotionally.
2. A 13-year-old kid in Saginaw was kicked off the school bus (because it wasn’t the one he normally rode) and forced to walk the three miles to campus. He walked to the police station instead. Wait, where’s Saginaw?
3. Not content to merely take the best athletes, the University of Oklahoma is now targeting the best students in North Texas as well. It would probably work even better if the school wasn’t in Oklahoma. Oh, come on. I’m mostly kidding.
Music of the non-hip-hop variety is typically not my purview, but an Austin-dwelling FBvian sent along this Spin article which names the band Overnight (scroll down) as one of “8 Undiscovered Bands Worth a Listen.” The group is New York based, but guitarist and keyboardest Arun Pandian is a Dallas native and Jesuit grad, who’s toured with the likes of Lauryn Hill. (He was also in a bridal party with me for said Austin dweller, but that’s another story.) The band’s music isn’t something I’d put on my iPod and run to, but I’ve been playing it on my computer as I type this and I’m kind of digging it. According to Spin, if you like Nada Surf and Bloc Party (um, who?), you’ll really dig it.
