That’s the premise of this major piece in the News this morning. The use of the word “exploring” makes it sound like he’s deep into an analysis. But the story itself reveals that he only talked to one state senator and one business leader a few months ago. Like any good mayor, he seems to have been looking at his options, and the bafflement expressed by his Council colleagues and City Manager Mary Suhm makes it clear that’s all he was doing. So, while I congratulate reporters at the News for finally catching wind of it, why all the words?
Come on, Wick. When Leppert’s talked to West about legislation enabling this and the head of the school board, apparently taken by surprise, calls the scheme “off the wall,” this is major local news.
@ Glenn, Under your scenario, how many follow up stories does this then warrant?
And what about the “ties to Leppert innuendo” about those on the advisory group for the school district, did I miss it – or was there a quote from anyone on that list?
Could this be all some sort of a “watch while I pull a hotel out of my hat” news distraction ploy?
I just read the story myself, before seeing your post, Wick. I sat down to put up a post congratulating the News on its solid reporting (in contrast to that irresponsible poppy**** they published Thursday about the district). True enough, it seems Leppert’s exploration of taking over the district happened weeks ago. But Suhm’s bafflement (and that of others) makes the story more forceful, not less.
Does this story deserve the play it got? Yes, it does. Because it would have been easy for Leppert to say, “Yes, I did have discussions about taking over the district. But that was in the past. My exploration of that route has ended. I have confidence in the district and the steps it has taken to reform itself academically and financially.” But that’s not what he said.
I think the fact that Leppert talked to the News about it proved the exploring is still ongoing…
It seems from Royce West that Leppert had a pretty specific proposal he wanted to put through the legislature that would give him control of the school district. This is actually a pretty darned good story from the DMN, for a change.
