Leading Off (2/13/09)

1. Looks a bit like the beginning of the season. The Mavs take a big second-half lead against the Celtics, only to see it slip away at the end. That’s what happens when you ask Devean George to do anything other than look sharp in sweats.

2. Are you scared about Mexican cartel violence coming to North Texas? You should be. Ish. Honestly, unless you’re involved in drug dealing, you’re fine and probably always will be. I just wanted to point to that link so you’ll check out the crazy comments like “NOW what we have, is a FOREIGN, third world culture where death is the NORM.”

3. Mr. Leppert goes to Washington. If the plan wasn’t to rob a D.C.-area bank, I think the trip will fail.

  1. Zac…you missed the best comment:

“america is doomed you dummies..wakeup..this is a sinful, evil, perverted, violent nation and america deserves whats coming…the only solution for you losers is to seek Jesus Christ..thats it..this whole mexican cartell crap is about the roots of catholicism..why cant you figure that out?..where does the mafia comefrom?where do about 95 percent of mexicans go to worship?..mother mary and the pope!..so prepare now as God soon wil unleash another crushing blow to this doomed nation..”

Now that’s comment gold right there.

  3. Yeah. A lot of innuendo with no solid thread in that cartel report.
And just for the record the “grenade linked to the Zetas” is a stretch to say the least.
Pharr has always had a gang problem, with the Tri-City Bombers and a newer gang whose name escapes me currently in turf battles. Police say that the one of the TCB members lobbed the grenade inside the club because members of the other gang were inside. The so-called “link” is it came from the same batch as some found in Mexico.

HOWEVER, cops say they believe only that it indicates the path that these weapons travel FROM the US TO Mexico. Not the other way around.

Leave it to the DMN to take such a local gang story in Pharr and turn it into a flimsy article full of innuendo.

  4. Zac, are you really going to blame George when Carlisle leaving JJ in the game while the Celtics cut into and then got the lead was the real cause? Or how about Rondo torching Kidd for a triple double?

The economy is rockin’ for gun dealers.

  7. Ask the families of Doris Ojeda(Ojeda’s) or Oscar Sanchez(La Calle Doce) how murder for hire/kidnappings by Mexicans took a tragic toll on them. People find out how much money you have and you become an instant target. Your life becomes worthless. Those two incidents should prove to be a gutcheck to everyone, that not even hiring a kid off the street as a dishwasher is a good idea.

  8. Re: #1

I’m not terribly dissapointed with last night’s loss. (Yes, I despise the “moral victory”…. but IJS that this loss doesn’t sting too much.)

    1) We’re playing w/out Jet
    2) Dirk didn’t back down to KG
    3) Antoine Wright is turning out to be the best part of the Kidd/Harris trade
    4) I honestly think Damp is playing better since Diop left … maybe the best since he’s been here
    5) Matt Carroll giving people breathers for a few minutes doesn’t scare me. He 40% on 3’s for his career, and unlike KVH or Stack, he doesn’t come straight off the bench thinking he should score. He shoots when he’s open and doesn’t, for the most part, make stupid plays that make me want to rip my hair out.

    I’m sure there’s more, but I’m spent.

  9. Bill has an excellent point – I have seen the agony left by one of those incidents. Do we really want to become like Mexico, where if you have any money you have to live shuttered up and sheltered?

We could start by enforcing the border.

If we can’t do that we could at least enforce laws here – code enforcement (occupancy for one), driver’s license, insurance, SSNs, valid tags (seriously the paper tags are often frauds – and I had a truck parked on my street for nearly a year with Mexican expired plates) and vehicle inspections (a lot of pollution while people are moaning about smokers) ETC.

  10. Whatever we do, we shouldn’t legalize and then heavily regulate drugs. Border enforcement — that’s it. Make the criminal supply chain even more lucrative. Also, find illegal immigrants and, er, smoke them out of their holes. That will stop drugs flowing in from Mexico.

Without illegal immigrants, there would be no drug trade rife with violence. None of the cartel members in the states are legal citizens. Sometimes things are so simple!

  11. @ WTF

While I wasn’t saying this last night (because I was too busy screaming “WHO FOULS RAY ALLEN AND SENDS HIM TO THE LINE WITH 27 SECONDS LEFT TO LET THEM GO UP BY FIVE?!”), I do agree with you. For a Jet-less Mavs to let Barea and Carroll play as long as they did last night against the Celtics and not be down by 40 points at any point feels like a moral victory. Really wish I hadn’t threatened to flip a car if we hung onto the 15 point lead we took into the fourth quarter though.

  12. And I, for one, welcome our new drug cartel overlords.

  18. Just the other evening Nightline had a feature on the alarming number of kidnappings in Phoenix. That’s right, Phoenix, the kidnapping capital of the US, and a lot of it is fuled by these Mexican drug cartels.

We all know what is going on near some of our own TX border towns, where the murder rates of their cross-boundary Mexican neighbor cities are out of control. Fear and violence do not respect borders very well and the people are terrorized. You take your life in your hands being a journalist or an honest police officer.

It’s coming to Dallas, people, and I hope David Kunkle is getting ready.
