@zac: unless the mavs lose most of their games while jet is out, then yes, they can stay in the playoff picture. as of now, they are less than 2 games out of 4th.

we all agree they’ll need a point guard soon, but their immediate need is for a 2 guard. Kidd can play 2 more years, unless he just breaks down. 2 years is plenty of time to find that player.

not sure how the mavs get a 2 guard through a trade…that’s what mark and donnie are paid to do (though I’ll gladly quit my day job to join the mavs front office). Look at minnesota and boston. boston gave up al jefferson who’s decent, but they got kg in return. that’s like dallas giving bass and gerald green to phoenix for amare, or to fill the 2 guard hole, jason richardson. Not saying it will happen, but it’s happened before.

i think dallas needs to hang on to j-ho, jet, kidd and dirk. anyone else can and should be options.

The Mavs need to blow it up and start over. Love Dirk, but the Mavs have squandered his greatness at this point. I admit that Kidd has played better this season than I expected him too (a very low bar) but there are still too many games where he just gets torched by the opposing PG — for every shot like the one he hit at the end of regulation against the Bulls, there are too many games where he just can’t cover his man. (Please don’t bring up his steals — one reason he gets so many steals is that he plays the passing lane instead of his man. How many times have you seen Kidd’s man have a wide open 3 because Kidd isn’t playing him tight?) Trade Kidd while you can, see what you can get for Howard, keep Bass, keep Dirk as part of the transition and to avoid a fan mutiny, get a hands transplant for Damp (because no one is going to take him), and see if you can max Jet’s current value (admittedly, a little diminished with the injury but it’s his non-shooting hand and it’s not like he blew out his MCL or anything).

@brett: I, too, love Kidd. I love Dirk even more. I’m not necessarily advocating either of these trades. All I’m saying is, if Terry misses three weeks, can the Mavs stay in the playoff picture? And even if they can, what about next year, or the year after that?

They are going to need a point guard of the future soon, and I’m not sure they’re going to be able to draft that player.

But setting that aside, how are they getting that two guard this year? Not sure Bass gets it done. Maybe trading Josh, but then who takes his place?

mavs get a decent 2 guard that can shoot and play d and it’s parade time in dallas…just don’t have laura miller or lepert plan anything just yet.

kidd’s ability goes far beyond the stat sheet…look how clutch he was in the win over chicago. we need him on this team to be successful.

I really like bass, but am willing to trade him if the right 2 guard comes to dallas.

if you trade dirk, we become the minnesota timberwolves.
