Leading Off (01/30/09)

1. Bad fourth-quarter results didn’t stop Irving-based Exxon Mobil Corp from breaking its own record for annual profit: $45.2 billion in 2008. Yes, that cackle you hear does sound like Mr. Burns.

2. The Nasher Sculpture Center has done the media a favor, hiring a new director, Jeremy Strick. Why a favor? Because he’s definitely qualified (he’s the former director of the highly regarded Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art), and he comes with baggage (he resigned in December after controversy over his management of the museum’s finances). Giddy up.

3. Marty Turco finally beat the mighty Red Wings in Detroit, 4-2. I would say something snarky here, but I really don’t know much about hockey. Nancy?

  2. I don’t if I would use “bad”…they still beat EPS estimates but their net definitely took a hit. No doubt the drooling Barney Frank’s of the world will take the full yr headline and spit (literally) some illogical tax rhetoric. Barry and Barn need to focus on the companies that don’t know what they are doing, not the ones that do.

  3. Wouldn’t it be a blessing if ALL corporations were posting profits like these? Profits that would allow them to employ more people, not lay them off? IJS

  4. Why can’t Exxon Mobil bail out the automobile industry? The industry is a major customer, after all. IJS.

  5. The LACMA has been a great Museum. It always has great collections and really caters to the Public. Never too high brow, it has always been a great family or ‘first date’ kinda place. This sounds like a perfect fit for the Nasher. Well…, except for this finance business.

  6. @JB – he was in charge of MOCA, not LACMA. Michael Govan is the director of LACMA.

  8. #3- It was his first regulation win at the Joe, he has won previously in the OT. The Stars actually took 3 out of 4 in this seasons series against the Wings overall as well. As an aside, my headline would have read “Marty finally parts the Red Sea” as some would say it is a miracle that he finally got the win there and they are the Red Wings, IJS.
