A publicly announced moratorium on posting to FB? That’s either arrogant or you need to redirect some of your energies away from D. None of us are that important.

We’d all like more civility in FB or any blog. Every day you’ll find comments here that are unnecessary and rude.

I’m not sympathetic, however, to noisy FB commentators who use this blog to raise their profile, but cannot handle the ensuing criticism. I think that’s the root of the, um, controversy.

I’ve always liked that fact that FB has a variety of information and viewpoints, but there does seem to have been more venom lately, and the Rawlins Gilliland post/comments (per Bethany’s blog excerpt above) is a good case in point. Many of the comments were just so uninteresting and unnecessary; it was like reading a transcript of the Jerry Springer Show. It doesn’t take much intellectual astuteness or critical analysis to be obnoxious or deliberately pessimistic. I’m not saying that a Pollyanna attitude is the way to go, either, but there should be some level of civility and respect — sarcasm and humor always welcome, in my opinion.

@ Brideget Nowhere — is the first name supposed to be “Bridget”? Sorry, the spelling is driving me crazy. Is it “Bride” + “get” or are you trying to spell the name, “Bridget”. I think I get the “Nowhere” part… )

I don’t know how elite FB is supposed to be. A lot of people that live in the so-called hood (like me) read D Mag. I wouldn’t consider people like me and Rawlins part of the velvet rope club.

i disagree, jim,
plant enough grass and flowers and they will overcome — and even eliminate — the weeds. (I’m no gardener. I just made that up. But it sounds right.) Self-policing encourages the best in commenters. So does an intelligent lead horse (i.e., the original post.)
All the more reason, btw, that FB needs a sports expert. A lead horse in that area would guide us to intelligent, grass-and-flowers discourse.

It’s obvious FrontBurner works best as a velvet rope club, Zac, so when you start to treat all who want to post here as equals, if you try to apply objective standards to deleting posts, inevitably the wrong types slip in and begin to act as if they had rights equal to the regulars and the types who truly belong here.

No one expects D Magazine to appeal to just any egalitarian mob, and no one expects D Magazine’s blog to do so either in the ways that other local media blogs attempt to, that’s patently absurd. FrontBurner isn’t an enterprise designed to attract broad-based good will and greater profitability to the publisher’s enterprises, it’s an editorial perquisite, “a daily conversation about Dallas among the editors of D Magazine” and their select friends, a private club where those fortunate select may snark as they will about the world they find themselves in and all others should count themselves privileged to read the gems that tumble forth.

Stand your ground, Zac, don’t let the riff-raff take over the temple.
