If slaughterhouses' had glass walls there would be a lot more vegetarians. I am a meat eater but have cut back to lose weight plus the cruelty factor in how livestock is handled is revolting. Cruelty is unnecessary. Animals are also full of pesticides which are passed on when they are consumed. Nitrates are a known carcinogen which should give everyone pause when consuming hot dogs, etc.. Be smart and buy versions do not contain such toxic substances.

@H.H.A.S.

"The bacon weave" is not only a good band name, but now all I can think about is going home and grilling up a 'weave' as a before dinner snack.

I gave up meat for 15 years... felt great, had tons of energy and hardly ever got sick. Then I slowly reintroduced it back into my diet about two years ago to the point where I have some form of meat at least once daily. YUM! The result: I got lazy, gained 20 pounds, and seems like I'm fighting some bug all the time. I'll be weaning myself off meat in 2009. Being meat-free works better for my health. YMMV.

Zac:

If you can quit eating meat, perhaps you could just as successfully (and just as finally) quit smoking?

Ha. Okay, real answer: my wife's idea, after a meat-filled road trip through Georgia and Tennessee that included an anniversary dinner at the Morton's in Atlanta when my brother was there. She thought it would be good to take a break, especially since I tend to overeat, especially since I tend(ed) to overeat meat. She thought it would be, like, a six-week sabbatical, and has regretted the idea ever since.

So, yes, mostly for dietary reasons. It's helped me keep the pounds off for the most part. Over the years, my reasoning has changed slightly, but that's really only because I think TV commercials with steak and burgers just kind of look gross, and that has turned me against the idea of going back.

I ask questions at restaurants, but mostly of the there's-no-meat-in-this? variety, not where it's cooked and that business. I don't like to be preached to, so I try not to preach to others, at least in this regard. You want to have meat dipped in meat -- which Eric did at our holiday party -- then go for it.
