Re: NorthPark Parking Lot Carjack Hoax

Allen Gwinn has just posted something about this, too. Councilman Sheffie Kadane’s office can be blamed for perpetuating the untruth. He sent out an e-mail saying that Channel 5 aired a segment about the carjackings. Now his office refuses to correct the mistake. If I worked in NorthPark’s front office, I’d be none too pleased.

  1. If I worked in NP’s front office, I’d be talking to the City Attorney about it.

  2. Money quote from the DPD’s media relations person:

“Most of our carjackers are sticking with the gun-in-the-face approach.”

  3. Did anyone else get an email from Sheffie Kadane’s council office about the time someone stole his toothbrush in Jamaica?

  4. This may not be a carjacking, but I don’t think it seems right to act like there have been no incidents at North Park since last May: http://dallasdirt.dmagazine.com/2008/11/19/northpark-crime/

  5. Regretably, I worked at NorthPark more years than I care to recall. And periodic crime was always there, but it was always soft peddled because of the powers-that-be clout NP carried. Those restraints are no longer in place intact, and now it sounds to me like NP is becoming victim of a local pile-on / ‘the sky is falling if NP has crime’ gossip.

Dallas’ NorthPark Center is an amazing wonderland of landmark American cache’ consumerism and has no peer in North American malls. Use valet parking, watch wherever you go anywhere shopping at Christmas holiday season in this economy. And then enjoy the trains at NP as well as all the great art the Nashers have always provided. It’s an education in more than retail.

Up until last Christmas, only Jody Dean knew about Jody Dean’s bible. Now we all know.

  7. But a local celeb getting his car stolen is not a crime pandemic. It simply means that he had the platform to complain about it.

That being said, an article in D just this year pointed to a rise in criminal activity at NorthPark. However, if I was NorthPark management, and I had been working to reduce that trend, Kadane’s e-mail would be a source of extreme irritation.

  8. If I had to pick a council member to fall for an urban legend, I’d pick the perfectly clueless Sheffie.

  9. NP is going to great lengths to keep their property safe. This year, they have added wooden riser platforms in all the mall gathering areas, with security guards on them. You can also see them walking everywhere, both inside and out.

My wife and I feel safer their than in Sheffie’s front yard!

  11. Back in the day, D did an article on how crime at North Park was higher than at Fair Park – would be interesting to see a sequel.
