That’s the news off a very early poll that was leaked to Paul Burka this morning. Not very surprising. But this is: either of the two strongest Democrats — Houston Mayor Bill White or former Comptroller John Sharp — would beat have a good chance against Perry in the general.

Wick, I think you’re misreading that last point — it just says Perry wouldn’t clear 50% against White or Sharp. That sounds to me more like Perry wins 47-42, or some other pair of numbers below 50 with undecideds making up the rest. If Perry was actually behind White or Sharp, I imagine the leaker would have said that clearly.
In fact, the phrasing (Hutchison “tops both potential Democratic candidates” and Perry “fails to reach 50% against either”) could even be true if Perry was performing better than Hutchinson (although I’m sure that’s not the case).
