Another Friday Question: Why Is Everything at the Cork N Bottle on Sale?

I’m talking about the liquid store on Mockingbird, near Central. Every bottle in the place — wine, spirits — has two price tags on it. A white one and a yellow sale one, about $3 cheaper. I’ve shopped there for years. Always the same. Couldn’t they just save overhead on the white stickers and pass that along to the customer?

Ron Kirk Goes To Washington?

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram says he’s a finalist for transportation secretary. Vinson & Elkins lawyer Kirk was a big-time bundler of donations for Obama and helped organize his appearance at Reunion Arena. I guess when Obama won, so did Kirk.

Friday Afternoon Random Question: 12 Spider Monkeys?

Last night at the holiday shindig an astrologist told Elizabeth “Spider Monkey” Lavin that, among other things, she was 50 years ahead of her time. No one was quite sure how to take this, save for Lavin, who has been crowing about it for the past 18 hours.

So FBvians: what does 2058 look like if Spider Monkey* is the harbinger of our future? Or, if you prefer, and so this doesn’t get too navel-gazy, what local person do you hope is actually an avatar for our potential future?

* For a brief scouting reporting, click that link to learn of some of her exploits. Also know that she will bet anyone anything at anytime, she never dresses for weather, and there is a better than good chance she will eventually cause someone — or several someones — at the D Empire to engage in fisticuffs.

RE: The Merger Between the News and the Star-T

Based on my conversations with interested parties at both papers (and some folks on the outside), there are several hot sports opinions that should be aired about this sports-department merger. Jump if so inclined:

Hutchison Smashes Perry, Could Beat Any Democrat

That’s the news off a very early poll that was leaked to Paul Burka this morning. Not very surprising. But this is: either of the two strongest Democrats — Houston Mayor Bill White or former Comptroller John Sharp — would beat have a good chance against Perry in the general.

Re: The Hinojosa Performance Review

So, I’m very confused about how this story was reported in the Dallas Morning News today. The headline in the paper said, “Hinojosa extension is denied.” This didn’t make DISD spokesman Jon Dahlander happy. He says the headline was “flat-out wrong”:

His contract wasn’t up for discussion and he didn’t seek an extension, as noted in the body of the article. It was a job evaluation. Period.

Okay, so there’s no way that headline was justified. (The online headline is different. I think it used to match the headline in the paper version, but I can’t be sure. Anyone remember?) You can’t deny something that wasn’t requested. But I can see how it was written given the lead of the story, which says that the takeaway from the three-hour closed-door evaluation was that “Hinojosa received no contract extension.” Now, is that justified?

In linking to the article today, Kent Fischer at the DMN says a contract extension is “perfunctory” in these instances. I have no idea if that is true. Kent would know before I would. And if that’s the case, then I can understand reporting it as though it’s important he didn’t receive an extension. (Although a contract through 2012 seems like a pretty solid show of support.) But I would have liked for that to have been made clear in the story. And it’s worth noting that WFAA and Channel 11 both reported the story as though the takeaway should have been that there were no changes to his contract and he wasn’t fired. That seems more even-handed to me. I’ll go ahead and turn comments on, so Kent can call me a DISD toady.

Re: Merger of DMN and Star-T

Full disclosure: DMN baseball beat writer, Evan Grant, is my bffswm and the Titus Pullo of the sports department. I took this picture of Evan “Grumpy” Grant after he covered a gladiator match at the Coliseum in Rome (Romo?). Needless to say, he knows much more than baseball. Obviously I am concerned for his life. So are the boys over at Lone Star Ball. Go vote.

To Buy … Or Not To Buy … A $430,000 Car

It’s not that the folks listening to live music, downing Kent Rathbun canapes and Moet champagne and inspecting the new, $430,000-plus Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe last night at Park Place Dealerships are disconnected from the economy, exactly. Sure, luxury-car sales at Park Place are down slightly from last year, marketing director Rob Sumner says. But the people who favor expensive cars like the Rolls–captain of industry types–are still buying them, even as many watch their net worths shrink. Heck, Sumner says, Park Place sold five Rolls or Bentleys just last week. Take David Genever-Watling and his wife, Janet (shown here in a Marty Perlman photo), for example. Janet and her husband, a former president and CEO of GE Power Systems, were all over the ‘09 Phantom last night–for one main reason. (more…)

Re: D Magazine Christmas Party

Sorry, Timmy, I have a more compelling shot of last night’s “Throw Down at D Magazine Where We Give a Damn.” And no, that isn’t me in Timmy’s picture it’s just a middle-aged employee wearing a sweatshirt. (Go Petes!)

The Merger of the DMN and the Star-T

Fingers of Fury has some details about how the News and the Star-T are merging their news-gathering operations, specifically in the sports arena. One thing you can look forward to: Evan Grant, named a Texas Sportswriter of the Year for his work covering the Rangers, will be moved to the Cowboys beat. I’ve got a couple of points to make here. You’ll want to jump:

An “Empty Chair” Interview With Robert Decherd

Alan Mutter, the managing partner of Tapit Partners in Silicon Valley whose hobby is monitoring the newspaper business, tried to do a Q&A with A. H. Belo’s Decherd on his pay raise. No response. So Mutter did the Q&A anyway.

In a word: devastating.

More Gary Patterson Rumors

A Fort Worth FrontBurnervian remembers the rumors about TCU Coach Gary Patterson going to Kansas State. This time, there’s talk of Patterson interviewing at Auburn. FWIW.

When I Want to See the Future Cowboys Stadium…

I look toward Indianapolis. Why? Because Dallas-based HKS, the firm that designed Indy’s stadium, designed the Cowboys’ stadium. Now comes an article in the New York Times that shows Indy’s Lucas Oil Stadium being used as a showroom for washers and dryers; outside of the stadium is a service station to promote Lucas Oil. Which begs raises the question: What types of retail merchandise will the Cowboys be hawking in Arlington (besides those awesome cheese steak sandwiches and Jason Witten jerseys)? One guess is they’ll be hawking flat-screen TVs. They’ve got an enormous showroom right there on the field, after all.

Friday Fun: Auditorium

Hello Friday, my old friend. It’s time for fun Friday again. Today’s game is called Auditorium, and I’m going to be honest with you: I haven’t fully vetted it yet. A kind FrontBurnervian suggested it as a Friday Fun game today, and a patient FrontBurnervian suggested it a week or so ago. Based on those two data points, I’m going to guess it’s good. The object is to figure out the object. And there’s music. Go explore.
