And of course we also have some superior secondary schools (Woodrow mock trial team leaves for Harvard Friday). The community involvement is off the charts in our 'hood, and it makes all the difference. We've been involved in the Early Childhood PTA for about 2 1/2 years, and my daughter is only 3! A week ago, I spent an entire day as ‘guest teacher’ at my DISD alma mater, James Bonham Elementary (Exemplary honoree) on Henderson (between Old Monk and Louie’s for you lush sorts). This K-3 grade school was endearing (props to teacher Margaret Ross and principal Sandra Fernandez) and I plan to spend a day with the other two 3rd grades and to be very active in DISD career days across the city in 2009 as I was in 2008. It truly helps to see education and the DISD from the inside out rather than posturing how dreadful (you assume them to be). I left that day feeling good about a lot of things, and worried about others but determined that we respect and support the (yes) underfunded DISD schools.
