On the way to the dentist this morning I discovered The Cuckoo’s Nest–the pool hall at University and Greenville–is no longer. By the looks of the broken windows and not-new For Lease sign, I’m guessing it closed months and months ago. As pool halls go, it’s not much of a loss. Not like West End Billiards, which was awesome (but I’m biased: a Molson beer rep gave out free samples the one night I happen to be there, even though it was a school night and even though I was still in school). At least Sharky’s, the dive at Walnut Hill and Greenville, is still in operation. And, for fancy cue action, there’s always Dave & Buster’s and Carson’s Live. Anyone been to that new place Dallas Billiards at Fitzhugh and Bryan?
No Cuckoos Nest, no Spankee’s and no Fare. Where will I go after perusing W’s new library?
What about Billiard Bar? That place is the shizz!
Ummm, Spankees closed?!?!?! Wow. One less place to go on an Impromptu Cultural Anthropological Study night.
RIP The Swingers Bar….With a Twist!
The Fitzugh and Bryan place is actually the old Dallasite Bar that used to be at Ross and Hall, by the Scorpians biker club. I’ve been once; wouldn’t really call it a “Billards Bar”, though they have a few tables.
CJ’s on Gaston hasn’t closed yet, has it? For authentic pool hall experience that was it (real sharks!).
JB you forgot the Krizbar. Well, you are probably too young to remember that one. How about Grandfaloon?
Anyhow this building housed what I believe was the second location of The Black-Eyed-Pea. Also there was an excellent Chinese restaurant next door in the late 70s early 80s - The San Pan. But I’m sure some even older-timer can tell us what was there originally.
BTW I have been to The Dallasite across from Jimmy’s on Fitzhugh. Pretty good place, I went to see the neighborhood kids in Eight Arms to Hold You (Beatles tribute band).
Too bad about the Cuckoos Nest, but I’m surprised it lasted as long as it actually did. That place was sketchy. I know this from experience.
Seems it is ripe for a bit more SMU eminent domain style purchase. Perhaps they could team up with Ogle’s and Tiggers to create the SMU trampstamp and peroxide blonde resource center…
