The Best Sandwiches in Dallas According to Me

Those who know me know of my fondness for sandwiches. It’s my favorite food group. I have, over the years, developed a roster of regular sandwiches at local sandwich places that I rotate almost weekly. Here, then, is that roster, in rough order of frequency:

P.D. Johnson’s. Spanky J on white, no tomato. (Ham, turkey, bacon, green bell pepper, lettuce, onion, and cheddar cheese.)

Jersey Mike’s. No. 2 (Jersey Shore Favorite), Mike’s Way, no tomato. (Ham, provolone, cappacuolo.)

Great American Hero. No. 6 (Great American Hero) on jalapeno cheese bread, no tomato. (Genoa salami, bologna, baked ham, and provolone.)

NY Subs. No. 15 on white, no tomato. (Peppered beef, capicola, provolone.)

Jimmy’s Food Store. Italian Sub on white, no pickles. (An assortment of Italian meats that are unknown to me yet delicious.)

Texadelphia. Texican. (Beef cheesesteak with queso.)

Great Outdoors. No. 3, “works, no tomato.” (Turkey pastrami and substitute cheddar instead of provolone … heated on a cold day.)

Jimmy John’s. (Note: I have not decided upon a regular sandwich here, as I go from the Vito to the Italian Night Club to the Country Club.)

Antoine’s. Original. (German salami, ham, provolone, chow chow, pickles.*) *to be removed before eating.

Urbano Paninoteca. Smoked Mozzarella and Prosciutto. (With spinach and extra olive oil.)

I’m sure I’m forgetting some, but compiling this list has made me too hungry to continue. Please add your own. No tomato.

Update: I knew I forgot one. Philly Connection Cheese Steaks. Original. Small, unless I’m feeling gluttonous.

  11. Do they still make a meatloaf sandwich at Central Market? The ones in San Antonio don’t.

No cheesesteak in DFW is any good. It’s like trying to get good mexican food in the northeast.

  15. The “Miller Time” pulled pork sandwich at Corner Market (Greenville @ McCommas), substituting cheddar for American cheese. A bunch of other good sandwich choices there as well.

Glad to see NY Subs and Antoine’s received mentions, too.

  16. @drew: I’ve had the Miller Time once. That sandwich has potential.

  19. @Bethany – there simply is nothing better than a little avocado on just about anything.

Avocados are like the bacon of the fruit world.

And bacon, as my hubby likes to say, is “the unstoppable meat.”

  25. I’m cutting back on meat, so…
    La Cubanita’s vegetariano.
Which Wich’s avocado and tomato (sorry Adam) with onions, peppers, cucumber, oil & vinegar, salt & pepper. Delish!

    When I’m feeling more carnivorous…
Central Market’s turkey and brie with cranberry sauce.
Potbelly’s turkey with everything on it.

When I was a kid, we listened to this song all. the. time.

    Sandwiches are beautiful,
    Sandwiches are fine.
    I like sandwiches, I eat them all the time;
    I eat them for my supper and I eat them for my lunch;
If I had a hundred sandwiches, I’d eat them all at once.

  28. Stay away from Mr. Goodcents that just opened on McKinney Ave if you want a decent sub, I was extremely disappointed. Their gimmick seems to be that slice the meat when you order the sandwich which doesn’t matter to me, their bread isn’t very good, the subs are very thin and cut on both sides so they are hard to eat, they don’t toast them and they were expensive.

Frankly they would have been much better off just opening a Sub store without licensing the Mr. Goodcents franchise which I have never heard of.

  29. WARNING…When ordering the cuban sandwich at Jimmy’s, be careful not to simply refer to it as a “Cuban.”

I once commented to a friend, as we waited for our sandwich to be prepared and pressed that “The cubans take forever.” Apparently, I offended an elderly cuban woman standing nearby, who scowled at me and and said, “Esscuse me?!?!” I felt like Larry David, as I explained that I meant no offense to her or the people of Cuba.

  31. Blackened Chicken Po-Boy at Big Easy. Something about the way the mayo blends with the blackened seasoning from the juicy fresh grilled chicken breast. Thank god I stopped eating these back in my early 20’s.

Back when there was a Great American Hero near Garland and Buckner, the Heavenly Hero was the way to go. I know cream cheese on a sandwich sounds funky, but you have to try it before dismissing it. Great Outdoor’s Invention is similar but runs a distant second.

No Mr. G’s fans out there?

  32. Belmont Chicken @ Corner Market. The salami and pesto take an ordinary chicken sandwich and make it more fattening than it should be. Perfect.

  38. Number 11 smoked at New York Subway on Asbury. Been eating those since my days on the Hilltop. Don’t ask how long that is — let’s just say the place has been there forever. Only change is the workers – now knowing a little Spanish helps…

Speaking of Jersey Mike’s does anyone remember Zak’s near the same location on Greenville? I used to see Drew Pearson in there. Also I miss Howdy’s in Lakewood. Chicken pita served by Sondra was the best.

Just about everything at the Corner Market on Greenville is wonderful. A great place just to hang out with your laptop, as well.

Shout out to Wildcat Paul D. at Jimmy’s – love all your comestibles!

  50. Adam, I can understand the “no pickles,” but no tomatoes? Dude!

Of course, if you’re just skipping those flavorless, pinkish, white-centered tomatoes sold at most grocery stores, which are a travesty of the real thing, well, I can understand that, too.
