My Sister Walked Sixty Miles to Raise Money for Breast Cancer Research

My family thought my sister Amy (far right) was nuts when she announced she was in training to walk sixty miles over three days to help raise money for Susan G. Komen breast cancer research. She is not only crazy, she is pregnant and the trek would involve sleeping on the ground for two nights. But she, and 3,200 others, started Friday in Parker and finished yesterday at SMU. There were lots of tears at the finish line and they weren’t for the blisters or the leg cramps–they were tears for the $7.9 million dollars they raised in honor of the friends they have lost to breast cancer. Way to go, girl.

  1. Wow, congrats to your sister Amy and everyone else who participated and/or donated time and money to this cause.

The Komen foundation not only does great work for those battling cancer, but they also have one of the highest ratios of funds donated that are used for pure research and finding a cure and not for administrative overhead.

Way to go, Amy! Show them how it’s done!

  3. I can’t imagine walking 60 miles. That is just awesome. Thank you Amy for doing what more of us should be doing. Off the couch and on to the streets.

  4. Congratulations! The few pregnant women who completed the walk are amazing examples of determination.

I too participated in the 3-day walk this year. What an incredible event! It is meticulously planned and inspirational at every turn. As we were walking through Hebron on Saturday morning, I looked up and saw a simple 8.5 x 11 sign stuck to a stop sign pole that read “Blisters don’t need chemo.”

With that in mind, you find the strength to keep on walking.

Anyone who is able should put it on their life list of things to do … I look forward to walking again next year.

  5. My 18 yr. old neice did the walk, limping over the finish line, in honor of her Mom who was diagnosed in Feb. Goose bumps & weeping–a wonderful event.

Went to Mi Cocina @ HP afterwards. I suppose they got the memo—the service was the best we’ve had in years.

  6. Amy,
I am so blessed to have gotten to train with you and get to know your beautiful family. I was amazed at your determination to endure the 60 mile walk – the camping for 2 nights and the many very early weekend training walks and the amount of time that you devoted to the training that took away from your family time and the time for you. You have been such an inspiration to our team as well as the thousands that you walked with this weekend and shared your passion for this wonderful cause. Thanks for doing waht you did – thanks for sharing your life with me over the past 24 weeks – I call you my friend and my “sole sister”.
I can’t wait for February so I can hold the baby boy God will bless you and your family with.
    Judy

  9. Congratulations! We were there cheering you on–the walkers were so inspiring. We were amazed to see their strength and determination. We made fools of ourselves dancing in pink tutu’s to cheer you on. I haven’t laughed and cried so much at the same event!
