Jim Schutze Once Again Brings the Heat

We have some fun with Mr. Schutze around here on occasion (again, Jim, sorry for frightening you on Election Night), but he’s been doing great work recently. His latest column about DISD has the kind of stuff found in all of the best of his work: a few easily overlooked details that add up to something.

UPDATE: DISD spokesman Jon Dahlander points out: “The Raptor system is being used by several school districts in North Texas, including Dallas, Plano, McKinney, Rockwall, Carroll, and Frisco. Houston has been implementing it as well.”

Though I can see both sides of Schutze’s argument on the matter, in the end, I don’t think it’s a bad idea at all to install the Raptor at local schools. When it comes to child abduction, I err on the side of “whatever it takes.” That said, I do think there is something to what he says about it being installed at DISD HQ as it relates to a general tightening of security and how it might bode ill for Mike Hinojosa.  But what do I know? I’m a werewolf.

  1. Does the Raptor identify werewolves, or just sex offenders?

  2. Just the latter, but thanks for making me paranoid.

  3. It’s probably more reliable than the Rancor system.

  4. Rancor is reliable — a sustainable resource if ever there was one. We have some of world’s biggest rancor reserves right here in the U.S.A. (albeit nothing to compare with the Middle East, the world’s largest supplier of rancor).

  6. Geez, D Mag is passive-aggressive about Schutze.

Is this personal or just business? Or just a result of general dark-cloud editorial moodiness and too much drink?

  7. Yes, I hear that Raptor system is quite reliable. Look how well it worked for Enron.

  8. Also, I’d like to take this opportunity to reiterate my point that alleged child abductors are below the zombie-line and are thus eligible for summary execution.

  10. and Zac’s right (again) in that Jim Schutze has that ability to see through the fog and piece together seemingly innocuous details into a trend

  11. Zac Crain saying Jim Schutze is doing some good work lately is like James Singleton or Antoine Wright saying Dirk’s been playing some good ball lately, in spite of his spotty play in the past.

  12. @Alex: Using my beloved Mavs against me. I should hate it, but it’s too funny to ignore. Well played.

  13. Does Zac Crain start drinking very early in the day, or does he think he is witty?

Please refer to my post about drinking and general dark moods (swings). Too much black bile.

  16. @calvin: Did I black out during the part where that post became a swipe at Schutze?

  17. We’re like cub scouts huddled around the campfire telling each other scary stories: Perverts lurking on every schoolyard, terrorists riding every airplane.
