New Area Sports Magazine Debuts Next Month Detailing Sports From This Month

An invite for the launch party for a new publication just landed on Sarah’s desk. I grabbed it. The magazine is called Replay Sports Monthly. According to the magazine’s site, it is “Your Private Suite For Every Game.” There’s more:

You’ve waited long enough for a Dallas/Ft. Worth sports magazine and now it’s here! We’ll bring you all the sports you want in a comprehensive, entertaining style each month from writers you know.

A few things. One: Until today, I’d never heard of Replay. I know more than a few writers. It seems to me one of them might have mentioned something. Two: Launching a monthly magazine? That deals with last month’s sporting events (I’m assuming, based on the name)? Good luck. Three: Launching a monthly magazine? Now? In this economy? Extra good luck.

Some See Hell In Her Future, Gatlin Says

Some Dallasites think Kim Gatlin–author of the new book Good Christian Bitches, from Dallas’ Brown Books Publishing Group–is going to hell, the writer says. That’s one of the revelations from a brief Q&A with Gatlin (shown here) that’s just out in Newsweek magazine.

Dallas Businesspeople Gloomy Over An Obama Presidency

Some of Dallas’ biggest business names aren’t happy about the prospect of a president Barack Obama. “The younger generation is going crazy for liberalism,” realty doyenne Ebby Halliday said Saturday night, “but my generation is scared to death.” Perot Systems founder Ross Perot, asked about the current financial crisis, wasn’t much cheerier. “It would be wonderful if we had the right president in place to deal with it,” Perot said, “but the chances of that happening are getting slimmer and slimmer.” Meanwhile Perot’s son, Perot Systems chairman Ross Perot Jr., struck a more conciliatory note: “I think if the new president, probably Obama, comes out fast with a bipartisan message–announces that he’ll govern from the middle–then ends the class-warfare stuff and assembles a strong economic team,” we’ll be all right. Ebby, who predicted the financial meltdown could be worse than the Great Depression or the S&L crisis, concluded philosophically: “This too shall pass!” All three bigwigs were attending the 25th annual H. Neil Mallon Award dinner presented by the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth; this year Perot father and son received the Mallon.

Help “W”anted: President Seeks Administrative Assistant

A FrontBurnervian comes forth with the following job posting for a Bush office in Dallas:

The Selectee will perform a substantive variety of administrative support and customer service duties, critical to the daily office administration of the George W. Bush Protective Division.  Duties include, but are not limited to:  assists the Administrative Officer in providing administrative technical assistance, guidance, and service to the Special Agent in Charge and other division employees…

It didn’t mention anything about keeping a good working supply of chain saws and matchbooks at the ready for clearing brush. I call dibs for him to start hacking vegetation in my backyard once he gets here. That ought to keep him busy for the next four years.

Re: Bill Addison Leaves DMN

Here’s the internal memo on Addison’s departure:

It is with a mixture of sadness and joy that I announce that Bill Addison, The Dallas Morning News’ award-winning restaurant critic and editor since February 2007, will be leaving at the end of the year to become dining editor and restaurant critic for Atlanta magazine. While this is a great opportunity for Bill, we will certainly miss him.

Bill has raised the bar on dining criticism in Dallas with his incisive and entertaining reviews in Guide, on GuideLive.com and the Eats blog, as well as in The Best in DFW dining series. In fact, we announced just last week that the Association of Food Journalists awarded Bill second place in their 2008 competition for restaurant criticism.

Bill’s roots are on the East Coast and he previously worked in Atlanta as restaurant critic/food editor of Creative Loafing, Atlanta’s largest alternative weekly. Before coming to The News, he was a food critic for the San Francisco Chronicle.

Bill will assist in the national search for a replacement to continue The News’ focus on this important coverage area. All of us wish Bill the best as he returns to Atlanta.

DMN Down Again in Circulation

It’s not necessarily bad news if it is a planned and targeted shedding of unprofitable, marginal subscriptions. But if it is unplanned and untargeted, it is bad news indeed. For the six-month period ending September 2008, the News fell 9.28 percent. Click here to see how that compares with the other 25 largest newspapers in America.

Dita Von Teese: You Forgot To Call Me

I hear that burlesque beauty Dita Von Teese was in town again this year for amfAR’s Two x Two fundraiser on Saturday night. Von Tees was one of last year’s featured guests, to the delight of some and alleged shock of others. (Something about her martini glass dance being over the top.) Dita, those people just don’t appreciate you. Not like I do. I appreciate you a lot.

Leading Off (10/27/08)

1. James Fantroy, 1937-2008. The DMN sums up: “four-term Dallas City Council member, street-wise civil rights warrior, convicted thief, renowned polemicist, respected activist, and beloved southern-sector icon.”

2. The Cowboys beat the Bucs. Other foes vanquished yesterday: four decades of advancement in the area of the forward pass, my attention span, and Terrell Owens’ patience.

3. And finally, the owners of the Cherry Pit in Duncanville are fighting the sex club charges from the city on the grounds that whatever is on Jim Trulock’s forehead is punishment enough.

FrontBurner® has been called the best blog in town (recently, and repeatedly), a snarky celebration of ignorance, and a daily conversation about Dallas among the editors of D Magazine.
