Hypothetically, the following things happen on the Wednesday before Election Day:
- Tony Romo suffers a high ankle sprain trying to execute a scissors kick at a Metal Skool performance, effectively ending his season.
- While demolishing a building in Deep Ellum, workers discover the skeletal remains of a man who appears to have been murdered execution-style several decades prior. More curiously, near the bones, they find the following: a Mannlicher-Carcano bolt-action rifle; a handful of ammunition; detailed schematics of the Texas Schoolbook Depository; several falsified IDs; and folded in his pocket, though it is falling apart in places, what looks like a confession to the assassination of JFK.
- According to a semi-reliable source, Kent Fischer learns that Michael Hinojosa will be fired, possibly as soon as Friday afternoon.
- John McCain has a minor health scare, collapsing after a rally in Minnesota. He is okay, but spends the night in the hospital for observation.
You are the front-page editor of the Dallas Morning News. What story gets the most play?
If I were the editor, I’d go with the skeletal remains. But then again, that’s because I’m voting for McCain and wouldn’t want to run anything that could possibly discourage people from voting for him.
I’d run them in this order:
1. Skeletal remains
2. Romo
3. Hinojosa firing
4. McCain health scare
Which means that the DMN would probably lead with a “groundbreaking” survey linking the use of stick deodorant to bovine flatulence.
Knowing the DMN they would still blast the front page with their exclusive investigation on how much time Dallas Firefighters spend getting local cats out of trees at taxpayers expense rather than actually fighting fires.
All four… While watching Metal Skool in Deep Ellum tony does a scissors kick through the wall of the building, sprains his ankle… to properly fix hole building needs demolished leading to discovery of body… note in pocket also places guilt on entire Hinojosa family causing disgrace and subsequent firing… which causes McCain to have slight health scare.
Remember I am the DMN so I don’t check facts or sources.
They’d go with the skeletal remains, revealing that it (he?) voted democrat.
Most likely: A story about more benefits to Dallas from a downtown Convention Center hotel, as well as the magnificent benefits to Dallas from signature bridges.
I just hope the deep ellum building wont be mine.
Are the near-ancient skeletal remains, in any way, related to John McCain? This would influence my decision.
Devote the whole newspaper to the Romo injury. Sports stories are so undervalued when placed against actual news stories. Our heros are men of the gridiron, not the men that shape our history and/or make decisions that impact every day life.
1. Romo
2. Hinojosa
3. Skeletal Remains
4. McCain
If I worked for The Dallas Morning News, I would not be concerned with what is really the most important news story of the day. I would be concerned with what will sell the most papers. A multitude of arguments can be made about which of these 4 stories will sell the most papers.
McCain would be quickly dismissed as the lead. People just don’t care about politics anymore. Besides, he’s going to be just fine and our readers threaten us with pitchforks whenever we publish something negative about a Republican. (which means we’re threatened every day.. it just gets so old after a while)
Skeletal remains – the whole JFK story just doesn’t fit the young demo we’re looking for. They don’t really know who he was. It’s an interesting story, but there are so many stories out there about the assassination that it’s just too complex to report as the lead.
Hinojosa – thousands of DISD teachers and parents hate this guy and anything bad about him might tend to make them gleefully pick up the paper. Still, we’re trying to reach beyond just Dallas. It’s a tough call, but it has to play second.
Romo – He’s a member of the Dallas Cowboys – nuff said! It’s sports and that goes right to that youth audience we’re trying to reach. He’s young and popular and it deals with football. Besides, fans all over North Texas care about the Cowboys. We can probably do an extra press run and sell it out if we put this at the top.
Either Romo or McCain, because those are the only two stories they get from the AP.
Dallas has a daily newspaper?!?
Steve Blow’s missives on all of them and how Angela Hunt’s to blame for her meddling.
1. Skeletal remains
2. McCain health scare
3. Romo
4. Hinojosa firing
5. Recent photo of Jackie Floyd discovered
If that photo of Jack Floyd is in the skeleton’s wallet, then it’s a no-brainer. Kinda like Jack.
