Leading Off (10/7/08)

1. Lewisville decided not to pass an English-only resolution after a divisive council meeting. They took to heart the words of the Oak Point mayor, whose city did pass such a resolution:

“It did not change the way the city is run,” he said “We did not save any money, and we did not become more efficient with this resolution. The only thing it did for the city of Oak Point was to pit neighbor against neighbor.”

2. In DISD news, the district is trying to begin selling bonds for its $1.35 billion construction plan approved by voters in May, but can’t until a (relatively bogus) federal civil rights lawsuit is dealt with; DISD will begin laying off teachers October 15; and more CEOs and business types are joining the superintendent’s financial “kitchen cabinet” to help Hinojosa figure out just WTF happened.

3. Sixty-nine! Sixty-nine! It’s currently only 69 degrees! Temps expected to top out at 79 degrees today before climbing again. Enjoy, as Betty and Jodi say, this “sweattaweatha.”

  2. Don’t you mean a “divisive” council meeting?

  3. Is it naive of me to wonder why the same “kitchen cabinet” types can’t or won’t raise the money through private one time donations for the good of our kids? Just wishful thinking I guess.

  4. Because if you bail someone out every time they get into trouble, they will continue to engage in the same incompetent, risky behavior that got them into trouble in the first place. And then $700 billion later …….

  5. Can’t we take the $500 million that the “mayor” wants to build a hotel downtown that we don’t want and no hotel group wants to touch and oh I don’t know, pay teachers, build/repair schools?? This is embarrassing. Is “kitchen cabinet” the same as shadow government?

  7. No. 1 is an excellent example of how the ideas of a few end up hurting everyone.
