James Earl Jones Helps DCPA With Big Announcement

Earlier this morning, the Pavilion at the Belo Mansion was packed with local bigwigs and press people for a “Grand Opening Announcement” from the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts. Also hyped: A special guest appearance from a big Hollywood and Broadway star. At first I thought it might be Elton John, but then, for some reason, I was stuck on the guest being Bono, which is about the least likely person it could have been, in retrospect.

Anyway, it was James Earl Jones. After a standing o, he told us all about his career (including the time he performed Of Mice and Men at the Bob Hope Theatre at SMU), in his booming Darth Vader voice. He ended his speech with a soliloquy from Shakespeare’s As You Like It that had everyone entranced (All the world’s a stage/And all the men and women merely players, etc). I think we were all hoping that the next speaker, John Eagle, would announce Jones’ upcoming performance at the Wyly Theatre, but instead he told us the grand opening for the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts would be October 12, 2009. There will be a week-long celebration that includes performances in opera, theatre, dance, and Broadway, tours of the buildings, and collaborations with organizations like the DMA and the Nasher Sculpture Center. No word on which productions are in the works, or which big stars are going to grace these beautiful new stages. Stay tuned.

P.S. I tried to take a picture of JEJ, but it looked a lot like the one I took of Oscar de la Renta a few weeks ago. I’m an iPhone camera failure, as we all know. My apologies.
