Chumming the Snark Tank: DMN’s Karen Brooks on Sarah Palin vs. “The Biased Media Filter”

On the Dallas Morning News‘ Trail Blazers blog, Karen Brooks shares an e-mail she received from the McCain/Palin camp “mere seconds after last night’s debate.” The receipt of which prompted from Brooks a rather vigorous defense of her and her colleagues (or, as Palin refers to them in the message “[Obama-Biden Democrats'] allies in the liberal media”):

I said it about Clinton when she was moaning about media coverage, I said it about Obama when he was moaning about media coverage (and YES, we are the reason you know about Wright and Rezko so don’t even give me any flack about how we never covered that), and I’ll say it about Sarah Palin now.

We’re not going to stop asking the hard questions, whether you like it or not. Period. The media is NOT going to go easy on you because you’re a woman, or because you’re a man, or because you’re black or because you’re white, or because you’re new to all this is or because you’ve already been through the media wringer, or because you’ve got a Northern accent or because you’ve got a Southern drawl, or because you shoot moose or because you’re a vegetarian, for cryin out loud.

Sorry. Not gonna happen, no matter how much you beg and plead and point the finger and try to blame the media for your PR problems. This is nothing new. We get screamed and hollered at by people of both parties ALL. THE. TIME.

There. That should rile up some of you. Well played, Karen.

Someone needed to say it. Good for Karen!

  • Ed

Looks like a screaming fit from an extremely defensive reporter who’s trying to defend the indefensible.

  • Bethany

If the media is so evil, why does she use it? In this day and age, there are dozens of other ways to get your message out.

And I really get tired of my profession being called liberal - or people assuming that because I am a journalist, I must be.

Try doing a little research from some nonpartisan sources. I did:

After covering the campaigns for many weeks (not including four more to go), Karen is clearly frustrated. Anyone who thinks this kind of thing is fun needs to watch the HBO documentary “Journeys With George.”
Gov. Palin has a journalism degree and should clearly understand the time and effort that all media members put into providing equal time when covering campaigns.
Example: A 60-seccond DMN video of protesters and Palin supporters outside the Fairmont Hotel depicts 30 seconds of footage from either side.
But there’s money to be raised for more ads in battleground states. Who would see those ads if the evil, biased, filtering media weren’t around to air them?

And I guess Karen will ask Senator Biden about the US and France throwing Hezbollah out of Lebanon?

    Uh, didn’t think so.

I guess Karen is too busy interviewing Bozniacs.

I personally haven’t read Karen’s columns, so I don’t know what her views are. With that said, the moment she used the word “we,” she grouped herself in with the rest of the media. Therefore, she is far from accurate in her statement. The media DOES NOT treat Obama and Palin the same. They pitch him softballs and let him swing away, then mock and shake their heads at Palin’s answers to much more difficult questions. Their love fest with eventual president is evident and it makes me laugh that they try to say they treat everybody the same.

  • Bethany

Much more difficult questions? You mean like her choice of reading material or another Supreme Court case besides Roe v. Wade?

It’s tantamount to asking one kid “Explain and solve Rheinmman’s hypothesis,” and the other kid, “What does a kitty say?”

And the other kid blanking on the answer.

    Ed,
Who’s more indefensible, the reporters who ask tough questions or the readers who go to pieces when their candidates, their parties, their positions appear in anything less than the most flattering light?
Read this or any other blog, left or right. Then tell me who’s having the screaming fits out there? Better yet, look in the mirror.

  • Bill

Seeing the old moonbat bull dykes protesting Palin in front of the Fairmount today was good for a laugh. Only saw one Che shirt. Them broads are a slippin’.

Barry Obama has snubbed the local media everytime he has visited Dallas, even during his Reunion Arena appearance. Didn’t one of Barry’s brownshirts punch a photographer in the Gilley’s parking lot?

  • Dubious Brother

It seems that the Hillary camp had the same complaint about Obama getting the free pass. I can tell that Palin did well in the debate, which I think that she did, by the lack of headlines this morning. Can you imagine what they would have been if she really couldn’t “string two sentences together” or if she had tripped over her tongue as they expected her to do. If I am not mistaken, Joe Biden left last night with a little “lust in his heart.”

  • Bethany

Bill, did you hear he’s a Muslin?

  • amandacobra

    @ Bill

Barry? That’s the only one you’re gonna give us? But that’s the least funny one. What about Obambi? Or Hussein Obama? Or The Chosen One? Bin Biden Hussein Obama? The Messiah?

  • Jason

Bethany, I didn’t realize you were a journalist. Whom do you report for?

  • Bethany

I’ve been one for some time. Now I do in-house work for a company.

But I’ve worked for several newspapers. Being a journalist is kinda like being a doctor - you may quit operating or seeing patients, but you’re still one.

  • Daniel

Barry’s Brownshirts, really?? The bowling team?! Neat!

  • Tom

Gov. Palin, on Fox News today, said she doesn’t like questions and prefers to talk about why you shouldn’t vote for Sen. Obama.
Taking questions that haven’t been pre-screened, as opposed to reading sound bytes from teleprompters and note cards, is really hard! Especially one about what newspapers you read.

  • Bethany

Daniel, I think I just found my Halloween costume. Thanks!

  • yikesdallas

Watching Gov. Palin is just painful. I have flashbacks from high school of being asked a question in the middle of daydreaming, and then stumbling around with some kind of answer that doesn’t really answer anything. I’m sure she’s a wonderful mother, and apparently a good governor. She’s just not currently up to date with the knowledge required to be involved in national government.

And it’s depressing that people can’t see that.

For her not to comprehend the connection between Roe v Wade being overturned and people being put in jail for having abortions is stunning. (”Heavens no, Katie, I don’t want people to go to jail for having abortions!”)

For her to not understand that YES, it MATTERS what her personal opinions are about gay rights, abortion, the Constitution, etc., because SHE WOULD BE IN CHARGE, is even more depressing.

If you want to say she has a great personality, or fights against “the good ol’ boys”, or has changed Alaska’s politics, that’s cool. I agree she is all those things.

But to say with a straight face that she is more qualified than Obama AND Biden (and McCain!) is simply ridiculous. I don’t want a “Suzy Six Pack” to be in charge of my country!

  • yikesdallas

And “Name at least one magazine or newspaper you read” is DEFINITELY not a hardball question!

  • lightbulb

    @yikesdallas

It is a hardball question if you read, ya know, all of ‘em. You betcha.

  • Bethany

    Darn tootin’!

  • OhFor...

    Dubious Brother -

Ya’ll have an uncanny knack for complaining about what the newspapers and headlines WOULD HAVE SAID … but didn’t say, actually, technically.

This ability of yours to see the hypothetical future is incredible. How on earth do you do it?

  • tank

Palin’s raised the VP bar in this country now and forever.

  • Dubious Brother

    Hopefully Palin will watch this

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-_cYjKD8TI

to learn from the master community organizer how to handle the tough questions.

  • Dubious Brother

If only Sarah had watched this video of the master community organizer handling the tough questions about his plans for our medical system. youtube.com/watch?v=x-_cYjKD8TI

  • publicnewsense

I think the catch-up media might have gotten a lot of “tips” by reading bloggers. Just a thought.

  • yikesdallas

I guess it’s an improvement. George Bush said he didn’t read any newspapers, and Sarah Palin says she reads all of them.

Doesn’t anyone else think it’s troubling that the worry for Biden supporters was he would talk too much because his knowledge base is very expansive, but Palin’s supporters were worried she would talk too little because of her lack of knowledge (and apparently interest) about national issues?

  • lee lee

Tank, there’s not much of a bar…except probably the one where you’re drinking that six pack.
