The Sports Club/LA Will Surpass My Every Expectation

That’s what I learned from the letter that accompanied a promo brochure that arrived in the mail at my house over the weekend. The Sports Club/LA is the 78,000-square-foot, $35 million gym that’s going in at the new development at Central and Park Lane. Except, as the New York Times said, “To call this place a gym is like calling the Four Seasons a hostel.” I know the NYT said that because the 14-page promo brochure, printed on paper stock so heavy it could be used as a paper plate, includes the quote. I can tell this place is going to be expensive. You know how I can tell? Because nowhere in the brochure or on the gym’s website can I find prices for membership. And because this weekend, I actually got two of the brochures in the mail. And because the woman who wrote that letter to me, the founder of the Sports Club/LA is named Nanette Pattee Francini. You get involved with a woman who has three French names like that, it’s gonna cost you.

Awesome! I got one too…..now when do we start hanging out together. I like salad.

My grandparents belong to the Sports Club/LA in D.C. and it is truly UNBELIEVABLE! Everything is first class and the amenities are unlike any gym I’ve ever seen. Equinox watch out…

  • amandacobra

Why do all gyms have to have LA somewhere in the name? I thought LA branding was tired and worn out right around the time LA Law went off the air and they stopped making LA Gears.

  • Tim Rogers

    @ Katie: sock puppet?

  • JB

    @amandacobra
Yea. Perhaps they should call it “Arlington Fitness” or “Jerry Fitness.” Hmm…

    Jerry Nails
    Jerry Fashions
    Jerry Guns
    Jerry Lakers
    Etc.

  • JS

I received one as well. My first thought: Rip off!

  • Ed

I got one in the mail as well, and had the same thoughts. Who is going to pay the money for either that or Equinox? The neighborhood place I go to for $40/ mo. suits me just fine!

  • Low rent

I didn’t get one. I must not live in one of the target neighborhoods.

  • Bethany

It wasn’t the best use of advertising dollars. They could’ve just paid to insert their brochure nobody will read in the Briefings nobody reads.

Skip this crap and sign up for Jay’s Boot Camp… It’s the best workout you’ll ever get!!!! In fact, I think it was voted best workout in Dallas by D. Good stuff!

  • Reddy

You neglected to mention, Captain Premier Club, that some very important Dallasites have been seen at the clubs.

Mark Cuban! Roger Staubach! Don Henley!

I received one at home and our investment bank received one addressed to “lobby”. I think they wasted their money on this one.

Can’t wait to park my bad ass, leased Beamer out front, rock out to some Dave Mathews, and drag out some cougar tail!!!!

  • vceleste

I immediately threw ours away that is the last thing I needed Eric to see!

  • Katie

    HAHA, no sock puppeteering here.

  • Tim Rogers

Eric, would you please help your wife? She needs some periods and come capital letters. I think we have some in the copier room, third drawer from the right. Feel free to bring some home with you tonight.

Premier Club assumed the fetal position after The Dedman Center opened. I don’t have to explain the 100 reasons why, but the #1 is that the commute from sorority row is shorter.

  • Cliff Hanger

I received three of these beauties - I wonder how much they spent on that mailer?

I have been a member at Premier Club (Lifetime Fitness) for approximately two years now. I kept my membership through the entire 6+ month renovation, despite Lifetime’s policy not to discount membership fees when the club was basically reduced to an oversized garage with enough dust to make a person choke. Now that the renovation is complete, I concede Lifetime is a good club, however, from everything that I have read and heard from people very close the Park Lane development, monthly dues for Sports Club LA will be CHEAPER than Equinox’s rumored $140 memberships and only slightly higher than Lifetime’s current membership dues of $90+ per month. I have had the opportunity to visit a Sports Club LA in Orange County and it is without question the nicest club I have worked out in - for the added amenities and quality of Sports Club LA, I will be more than willing to pay a slight increase in monthly dues over Lifetime.

I know in L.A. (according to a friend who’s a member) there is a $2400 initial fee for the “executive” membership and the monthly fees are around $250. They do have a lot of perks…but i think for a workout facility, that’s kinda pricey.

  • JS

    $90+ a month? $140 a month? For a gym membership? That’s ridiculous.

  • vceleste

@Tim I have some capitol letters for you!!!!!

  • vceleste

yes, I just spelled capital wrong too.

  • the long-time teacher

Don’t worry, Vceleste. Check out Tim’s 13th word. Turns out Mr. Editor isn’t such a great speller either! And his mother’s a teacher. . .

  • andy

with all you ladies carrying your $2500 chanel bags, you can’t spend a little bit on a nice gym??? come one…

Thankgoodness they are finally opening a Sports Club/LA in Dallas! I had to cancel my membership when I moved to Texas and was truly disappointed there was not one here. Yes, it is more money, but worth every penny. They have a great class schedule and I’ve yet to find another club in the Dallas area that was remotely comparable. Sign me up!

  • Murray

I am getting a haircut so i can visit the construction site asap. I will bring my pack of fried chicken too.

  • terry

Who want to go to a club with a bunch of hamsters running around ******* each other all day!
