Leading Off (9/3/08): No Jokes Edition

1. Kevin Moriarty made his much-anticipated Dallas Theater Center debut last night. The new director promised to shake up the Kalita Humphreys Theater with his production of The Who’s Tommy. And that he did. Lawson Taitte’s review could hardly have been more glowing.

2. Dallas Fire-Rescue was again hit by thieves who this time stole a radio, fireman’s helmet, department gear bag, and flashlight from a North Dallas station. State Senator John Carona, for one, is sick of it.

3. Julie Turner, chairwoman of the Crystal Charity Ball Fashion Show and Luncheon, to be held September 11, has set a new fund-raising record for the gig: $765,000. The most expensive seats go for $2,000, and 200 people ponied up for one.

While the Senator’s comments are appreciated,
we really need stronger legislation regarding DWIs and the enforcement of DWI-related rulings.

People are dying every week in DFW because of accidents involving repeat-offender drunk drivers. At what point is enough, enough?

What can be done to keep people like this off the street? Is it at the state level, or is it some other issue that I’m missing?

  • Leatherwing

Why do we need stronger legislation? There are already laws in place forbidding what he did. Those laws were not enforced. Creating new laws will only muddy the water. Just enforce the laws already on the books.
Same applies to Senator Carona. It’s already illegal to steal from firehouses. Making it more illegal really doesn’t have an impact on people that do illegal things.

I can get Jett to respond.

Rumor has it that Wick sent Bible Girl to blog on Frontburner from the Republican Convention in St. Paul. She is currently blogging her support of the Pentecostal deacons who have blockaded the Log Cabin Republicans in a burning Winnebago.

And Jack, feel free to unleash your vitriol. I’m right there with you, my friend.

  • For the record

Amanda played by Daniel’s rules with a good start, but El Rey easily takes the first round with reference multiplicity.

None of my country’s athletes are in this event, so I’m objective. However, I can be had.

Regarding the article in Michael’s post, I particularly liked the line “Julio Garcia, who is Ms. Clouet’s godfather and is not related to Domingo Garcia”

    Hello Gang

I don’t know know how to explain this but here goes. I have one computer and one computer only. As far as I can remember my last posting on this blog was two words..
Porn again?.. It was in response for someone busting a storage bin and find porn.
Over the last several months, many people post under my name. Some deviation of my name or some insult to my name. I gather that if I wanted to post as Bart Simpson and knew his website, I could on this site.

I am not sure who is posting using my name and I don’t know how to control it. I once brought it to Adam’s attention when I thought it started to suggest I was involved in something illegal.

So if you can check the IP addresses, I am sure you will find they are not from me. Some computers have floating IP addresses. Mine does not. It stays the same all the time.

I understand that when I first started posting on this blog, I was incredibly vitriolic. I am an outspoken man who is gay, not a gay outspoken man. I understand I upset and hurt some feelings. I post two apologies on this blog. Since then, I have kept my comments to a minimum, fairly general and rarely with any venom. In other words I have tried.

I noticed that sometime when I simply disagreed with a post in a rational way, I was still trashed from every direction. I assumed that the damage was done and no apology would do. Thus recent comments have been attempts (albeit pathetic) at jokes or some sort of self depreciation.

I don’t understand the basis of the above post. I don’t understand the reasoning.
Why are people posting under my name? Then go so far as to retort under my name?

So, with that in mind, I will no longer post another comment using my name. So if you read them, they will not be from me and I am at a loss as to how to prove it. Perhaps by checking my IP.

I understand that there is nothing more I can do about it and I am certain the bashing will continue. Other than apologize again for something that I said over a year ago,I don’t know what else I can do.

    Peace,
    Jack Jett

  • Gadfly

    But, Daniel started it.

  • For the record

Yeah, Jack, it was gratuitous piling on this morning. I’m not sure why Daniel picked on you, as I haven’t seen any recent outspokenness from you in the 2-3 times/weekly I check in here, but perhaps it was a left-handed tribute to the high quality of your outspokenness.

As for folks posting under your name, again, I haven’t seen much of anything - spurious or authentic - with your moniker in the past couple of weeks, at least. I hope you do continue to post, though. You’re witty enough to avoid the pitfall of reflexive ranting. You give very little cause for grammar police action. (However, it should be “self deprecation”, unless you’re convinced you’re worth less financially, in which case it would indeed be “self depreciation”-probably a simple mispelling in your case.) And you were heretofore (ooooh! arcane word! extra points!) thick-skinned enough to take the ribbing which inevitably accrues to outspokenness. Seriously, don’t be a stranger.

    Wait, you’re gay?! Never mind.

  • amanda

    Let’s pick on Bethany now. I hear she’s a real *****.

  • Bob

    Who?

Only bozos and fools post using their real name.

  • Daniel

Jack, I have nothing against you personally. Your exceptionally vulgar and hateful outburst late yesterday amused me — it seemed unfair that it happened so late in the day. It was prime-time stuff. I really just wanted you to pick up where you left off, which was suggesting that the lot of us derive amusement and pleasure by violating our own daughters. If you claim that it wasn’t you who said it, then I take you at your word.

But, dammit, it was funny. I am puerile for thinking so, but there you have it.

  • Daniel

Oh, and the reference to “Christian wife-swapping” was good stuff, too. I was laughing at you and with you in equal measures. When you show that much emotion on a blog, though, you leave yourself open to being needled.

Again, I’m now confused as to whether it was actually you. No matter.

  • El Rey

    We are kindred spirits, Bethany.

In the early days of the internet, before the proliferation of Spam blockers, I made sure anyone I did not like received plenty of pen!s enlargement and Viagra emails.

  • Bethany

El Rey, a friend’s boyfriend once unceremoniously dumped her. We sent every denomination of religion to his house we could find online, with strict instructions that he was best reached at 5 a.m. on Sunday.
