1. Gustav’s impact on the Gulf Coast was less than feared, but it could cause the need for intermittent ducking in North Texas. By tomorrow, 30 mph winds are possible, which means I’ll be golfing, as it negates the advantage my partners have when they play me.
2. Sen. John Cornyn cut short his time at the Repulican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota, due to his concerns about Hurricane Gustav and because, as previously reported, the convention is being held in freakin’ St. Paul, Minnesota.
3. The State Fair of Texas announced its Big Tex Choice Awards, given to the Fair’s best foods. The “best taste” winner this year: chicken-fried bacon. Well, duh.
If you are looking for action in the St. Paul area, I have heard that the airport can be fun.
Hey now - St. Paul is actually a pretty cool city. Very walkable, historic buildings and neighborhoods, great restaurants - it’s basically to Minneapolis what Fort Worth is to Dallas. As long as you’re not there in the dead of winter, it’s actually not a bad place to visit at all.
Chicken fried bacon - will there be an angioplasty booth next to it?
Why don’t we add a “State Fair of Texas” wing to the DeBakey Institute of Methodist Hospital-Houston?
So is no one else going to bring it up????? Frontburner sends a team to Denver to cover potential unrest and there is nothing. They don’t send anyone to St. Paul and on the first day there is tear gas and “splinter groups”.
Davie, the “splinter groups” are pretty much the same dilettantes from Denver and Seattle, so your not missing much.
Gustav’s impact on my part of North Texas is that I had shrimp creole for dinner last night. Gotta love it when the in-laws decamp New Orleans and bring a freezer full of seafood with them.
1. Maybe Emeril will open up a restaurant in Dallas to serve displaced Louisianans (?) and spicy southern food loving Texans.
2. After Palin’s speech tomorrow night, St. Paul will be a non-story.
3. Fat wrapped in fatty carbs, then deep fried in lard. Next year, we will be shelling out six tickets for the SFOT minimalist winner of 2009 - a scoop of Butter Flavor Crisco…
What Fort Worth is to Dallas? I don’t understand this….You mean, it has a TGI Fridays, Barnes and Noble, Starbucks, and some Irish-y themed bar named O’Flannagans, or O’Malley’s, or the Dubliner throughout the square? Downtown Fort Worth is in danger of collapse with its wall of suburban chain stores…it’s only slight advantage is towards walkability. The latter is offset by the chains though, which will eventually kill the relevancy of the area. Look at the West End in the 1980’s for an example. You had a marketplace mall with several unique mom and pops that everyone would go to, and eventually, the chains moved in and people decided to leave (they pay higher rents, have more access to capital, and force out what gives the area its unique flavor). Honestly, who’s going to fly in from out of town to visit a Chili’s, when they’re on every street corner throughout the country?
Jason-
You forgot to mention Cabo, 8.0 (not really a chain), Billy Miner’s, Reata, Ferre, Piranha, Mercury, Riscky’s, The Vault, Taverna, Texas de Brazil (not really a full-fledged chain either), Del Frisco’s (too high-end to be lumped in with Chilis etc.), La Playa, Kalamata’s, etc.
Plus, I wasn’t just talking about Sundance Square. I was talking about central Fort Worth as a whole - the Cultural District, the TCU area, Stockyards, etc.
My general suckitude killed it for Trey going to St. Paul. Not a conspiracy. Just another in a long list of personal failures.
Fort Worth is a great place to take the kiddos while you drink beer. Which is a very different statement than “Fort Worth is a great place.” It’s a cross between Chuck E. Cheeses and a construction management convention.
JASON,
You’re right…cause I would much rather hang out in Downtown Dallas on a Friday night than Downtown Fort Worth…(wink).
Daniel, I was in FW on Sunday. Maybe you are going to the wrong places.
We’ll always have Paris, Eric.
Sounds like someone hasn’t found their D-spot.
The Chuck E. Cheese where I went to college served beer, IJS.
I bet not, Eric. The reason nobody from your magazine is going to St. Paul is nobody in the Park Cities area see’s their friends talking about McCain and getting everybody else excited about it. Obama is a fad. A fad like the $400 shoes that are purchased then sit in the closet for years.
McCain is the trusty pair of shoes that aren’t designed to be sold to the rich, fad driven crowd. He is not over-priced and uncomfortable wehen it comes down to it. Instead, he can be depended on to be very plain, boring, and experienced enough not to tax our country into oblivion.
Covering McCain is like covering your accountant. Boring but knowledgeable.
Voting for Obama is fun. You believe in his passion and the level of excitement he brings to the job. But once he is there, and you realize he isn’t good for being depended on to get you where you need to go, he will disappear to the closet only to be seen when you are looking to make a trip to Goodwill.
IJS.
Daniel: Pearl
Your welcome.
Oppps, “you’re.”
I once got a bj from a drunk chick outside a Chuck E. Cheese…IJS.
uh oh - that was you?
Doesn’t Trey already live in the vicinity of Minnesota?
Wow.
Jason, you speak as someone who hasn’t been to downtown Ft Worth. It’s at least ten years ahead of downtown Dallas, and it has very few large chains. The Flying Saucer started there, and 8.0 succeeded there (while failing in uptown).
Downtown Dallas is coming around, but until the city realizes that you can’t allow thousands of addicts to wander the streets harassing people, it will never get to the level of downtown Ft Worth.
The Flying Saucer started in Addison. It’s true that after 8.0’s lengthy tenure as a Dallas institution had begun to grow threadbare, the good folks of Cowtown couldn’t tell the difference. So I’ll give you that.
Yeah sure. If you like kitschy chain places Fort Worth is way ahead of Dallas - a whole square of them. As far as independent stuff you would rather go to Reata than Stephen Pyles???
Wow…a misplaced prepositional phrase and we’re Larry Craiging?
thanks for ruining my flirtations with Bethany, Jack…………..sigh
…..and give me a call, Im out of weed and Im not happy about it!!!
Sorry Jackie, I know the truth hurts. While you make wild accusations against me, we all know what I posted about you is true. Are you ashamed or something?
