Jerry Reed, Man With Deep North Texas Connection, Dies

So sad. Jerry Reed, aka Cledus “Snowman” Snow, the architect behind the incredible 1977 “Bandit Bootleg Run” (Georgia to Texarkana to Georgia in under 28 hours carrying 400 cases of Coors), has passed. Notice I mentioned Texarkana? That’s kinda North Texas, right? Actually, don’t care. Man, I love that movie. Cue it.

Finest cinema in the history of cinema. Along with the Godfather, that movie is the I Ching of manhood.

sad day, reminds me of the time I was running 10 cases of Coors in the back of station wagon from Dallas to Nashville in ‘73. Could get a dollar a can or more back then.

Diesel at $0.48 a gallon in that clip!

Speaking of movies (and people who died yesterday), the “In a world…” movie trailer voice guy passed away as well.

I was thinking just about Amos Moses and whether he survived Hurricane Gustav. The storm’s path went about 45 minutes southeast of Thibodeaux, Louisiana. He lived by himself in a swamp, so maybe FEMA should check on him.

  • He Kexin

FEMA might go missin like that sheriff. Swamp cajuns don’t care much for FEMA.

Jerry Reed was one of the world’s greatest guitarists. Too bad he only sang to stupid songs. But he knew this. And so did we.

I don’t think even the Sprinkle’s Cupcake Hysteria of 07 or the Great Hipster Iphone Phenomenon can be eclipsed by the overall popularity in the 1970’s of Yellow Dog Can Coors. Nothing said you were on the cutting edge of haute in Dallas if you casually sipped the Rocky Mountain Original.

Bill is right. Jerry Reed was a premier picker. Maybe second only to Chet Atkins hisownself. Saw him in concert once and he set the ax on fire.

Jerry had a long way to go, but a short time to get there.

Texarkana is Northeast Texas (the Texas side anyhow). Texas side is dry, Arkansas side is wet, so I reckon Ol’ Jerry went to the Arkansas side.

  • LakeWWWooder

I hope he brought his “knockin’ down a row of motorcycles” face to the pearly gates.

  • mm

@Dwight: actually, the whole thing was poetic license. Texas side was dry, as you say. But Coors couldn’t be sold east of Texas, so Texarkana, AR couldn’t sell Coors either.

But “the boys are thirstly in Atlanta, and there’s beer in Nacogdoches” didn’t have quite the same ring.
