FrontBurner® has been called the best blog in Dallas (repeatedly), a snarky celebration of ignorance, and a daily conversation about Dallas among the editors of D Magazine.

It's not even in the Gulf of Mexico yet, and they're evacuating the whole city?

We'll be paying for Katrina for decades.

In the realm of lessons learned - Buses are en route to assist with the evacuation, the Nat'l Guard has been called up, and the Feds already have personnel down there. It seems the new gov'ner has his stuff figured out. I heard Mayor Ray Nagin say the levees were built and mother nature was about to put them to the test.

My PSA - more solutions / less griping:

Volunteers Urged to Take Red Cross Training in Advance of Hurricane Gustav

Weekend “Shelter Boot Camp” Set up in Dallas/Fort Worth

WHAT: With the threat of Hurricane Gustav looming over Texas and Louisiana, and knowing that the Dallas/Fort Worth area is a primary evacuation site for the Gulf Coast, the American Red Cross is offering “Shetler Boot Camp”, a specialized training that will teach new Red Cross volunteers how to effectively work in evacuee shelters throughout the North Texas area.

WHERE: Two Metroplex locations:

American Red Cross Dallas Area Chapter
4800 Harry Hines Blved., Dallas, Texas

American Red Cross Chisholm Trail Chapter
1515 S. Sylvania Avenue, Fort Worth, Texas

WHEN: Saturday or Sunday, August 30 or 31 from 9:00a.m.-5:00p.m. (Interested volunteers only need to take one day of training). To register for the “Shelter Boot Camp”, please call 214-678-4800 in the Dallas area, or 817-335-9137 in the Fort Worth area. Interested volunteers can also visit www.redcrossdfw.org, select your local chapter and download a volunteer application.

VISUALS: Before the training on Saturday and Sunday, visuals can include groups of Red Cross workers assembled at conference tables, coordinating with local and state officials in advance of landfall. Courses being held on Saturday and Sunday will be available visuals.

BACKGROUND: It has been nearly three years since the landfall of Hurricane Katrina, which brought nearly 29,000 evacuees to Red Cross shelters in the DFW area. Since that time, the local chapters have worked around the clock to build capacity and become better prepared for a mass Gulf Coast evacuation. Hurricane Gustav has the potential to put those plans to the test.

Huh. My wife's New Orleanian cousin, her husband, and their two kids are right now en route to our house. Any chance we can get em a room at the SPCA?
