Was There Media Bias in the Edwards Story?

You can bet your booty there was. In a very revealing post last week, the News’ Mike Hashimoto showed how blind our media friends can be when it comes to their own biases — and to protecting those biases.

I heard about the affair/love child back in January. It came out in the MSM 7 months later. What more do you need to answer that question?!?

  • Chris

    I don’t see a picture!?!

The most telling piece of Hash’s post is this sentence: “This colleague went on to argue that we didn’t know whether any big-time media outlets, like either Times (New York or LA version) or the Washington Post or the broadcast networks, pursued any or all of the Edwards story.”

It’s sad that less than 10 years ago, the DMN would have been considered an influenetial, if not big-time media outlet…. now its own editorial board members are casting themselves as second-class journalism citizens.

Yes it’s media bias, Weicker. And the media did so well pushing for Edwards that he ended up in third place in a field of three candidates.

  • Snotty-tot

    Blind and thin-skinned.

  • The Night Crawler

Democrats in the media covering up other Democrats. Great journalistic standards. And they wonder why they’re lossing their audience (readers)in mass. Game-over.

It’s a shame he didn’t analyze his own employer’s bias in it’s reporting on the downtown real estate market. The Trinity River Toll Way and the Convention Center Hotel being prime, recent, examples of this bias.

For what it’s worth, I think the MSM’s reluctance to report on the Edwards’ affair has more to do with the icky personal nature of the entire thing. The media has become less and less willing to report on the unsightly personal affairs of public officials, unless there’s cops or minors, or the same sex involved of course.

The fact that his wife is going to die of cancer probably doesn’t help the media get the bad taste out of their mouth for reporting on it.

Here is what David Brooks, a thinking-man’s conservative journalist, has to say about the media and the Edwards affair:
“I hope the mainstream media doesn’t decide that this means they should commit their limited investigative resources to trailing every allegation of political adultery The National Enquirer uncovers. We all have specialties in life — I’m good with letting The National Enquirer folks hang onto their niche…. So no, I don’t think we should follow The National Enquirer into that swamp.”

it’s not biased reporting as much as it’s lazy-ass reporting and a lack of gumption from over-paid, desk-jockey, baby-boomer, middle-management editors like Hashimoto who are afraid to step outside the box and be the first publish something controversial, which is what true journalists yearn for

as a reporting assistant for a business newswire in early 1999, i was convinced one Houston-based energy concern was fudging its numbers, so i went to my immediate boss and he agreed that while we couldn’t pinpoint exactly how, it did appear there was some cooking of the books going on

we went to the AME and he brushed us off as newbies that lacked a discerning eye and needed to improve our news judgment

he said something i’ll never forget: “What does the company have to gain from lying?”

Enron filed for bankruptcy in December 2001

there is no media conspiracy, folks, right-wing, left-wing or otherwise

maybe a media Idiocracy, but no conspiracy…

“And they wonder why they’re lossing their audience (readers)in mass”

Yep, reading comprehension ain’t what it used to be.

Speaking of media bias, something Wick-Wick is very familiar with. Be sure to watch the brilliant documentary on Helen Thomas tonight on HBO. I don’t see any articles here about Harriet Miers. When was the last in depth D Magazine investigation into Halliburton? Corporate media bias is what lead us into war. You think these media corps want to loose these massive tax breaks
    helps the rich get richer?

  • Gwyon

This would be the same media that completely ignored the John Edwards-$400-haircut story for months.

    Er, wait…

  • bleacherbum

And what about the right-wing media regarding the Edwards affair? What’s the matter Wick — can’t pick up a phone? One little tip…don’t do what Tim does and call the flak for comment. Just a guess, but the flak might not tell you the whole truth.

  • Billusa99

Wick… it’s August 21st! You link to a DMN blog post from August 11th, and expect outrage about it? This is news now?

    How WAS your nap????

  • Bethany

Hmpfh … my bowels can’t type. But if they could, they would know that lose is different from loose.

it’s what we’ve come to expect from Mr. Allison, maybe he’s too busy to be bothered this whole real time, new media, 24/7 news cycle, as he’s always the last to know

Yes indeed, much like they’re ignoring McCain’s adultery.

  • duckwing2951

I guess it takes the National Enquirer’s relentless reporters who just wouldn’t give up on the story. Goes to show the bias in the mainstream media…
