Used them in Paris – great idea, but didn’t I just read that the Austin and Portland efforts ended in failure when the bikes were stolen or vandalized?

This was tried in Dallas on the Katy Trail. Within 3-4 days all the bikes were stolen. Now all that remains are a dozen or so empty bike lockers at the northern end of the trail near Airline. Nice bikes too donated by Dasani water(Coca Cola). Treks I think.

Wick and commenters alike are confusing free (yellowbike, etc) with public bike rentals (what the linked article describes).
The public bike rental programs require riders to swipe a credit card to pull a bike off of the rack and “If a bike is lost or damaged, the renter is responsible for a hefty $550 fine.”

FrontBurner® launched in March 2003, the first blog in Dallas run by a media organization. This is where the editors of D Magazine come to waste a tremendous amount of time.
