Will Wilkinson’s commentary on today’s Marketplace Morning Report is, um, critical (hostile?) to T. Boone’s energy plan to lessen our dependence on foreign oil and embrace wind and natural gas as alternate power sources. Take a listen.

Wow…completely schizophrenic coverage on this deal…
Some skepticism toward Picken’s plan is natural when you realize the he and his companies will be a chief beneficiary if adopted. It doesn’t take much imagination to envision the federal tax breaks, subsidies, ect. that he will seek with his “army of lobbyists.” Plus, not enough expert dissection of the short and long-term plus and minuses of going his route has been done at this point.
I don’t agree with Wilkinson on his point about lack of market demand for natural gas-powered transportation options. If the infrastructure for convenient refueling stations and broad availability of CNG vehicles were in place, I think we would see a sizeable consumer shift toward these vehicles. Stable, domestic fuel supply and much greener than petrol.

Natural gas vehicles? Take a look at the number of large corporate (UPS) and municipalities using the option. I’m sure they’re not doing it just to be ‘green’. It is more about the availability of natural gas and we all know Exxon doesn’t sell it at ‘on the run’. But I’m sure Atmos would be tickled pink to ‘gas’ up your car.
and windfarms? In 2007, 30% of the nation’s new energy came from wind (American Wind Energy Assoc).

Wilkinson’s piece sounded a lot like a conclusion in search of supporting arguments. His little dig at the end about Pickens’ support for the Swift Boat Veterans was the tell.

pickens just wants the feds to use imminent domain to bring power lines to dfw from the panhandle so he can lay pipe underneath their wire and sell all the water rights he owns to dfw for a more astronomical profit than his wind farm will ever create. lucky for him, the enviro-manics will drive this deal through and he’ll be laughing all the way to the bank.

T Boone is a smart man. Of course he is investing in his ideas. You can’t hate on people who put their money where their mouth is.
He also gives away a lot of money.
