Live Update From Huge Addison Swim Meet

If your child swims on a team, there is a greater-than-zero chance that he or she is right now flailing about in one of two pools inside the Loos Aquatorium, in Addison. Hard to say, but I’d put the over-under at 600 kids. They’re warming up right now. I think the season championships are about to begin. Again, hard to say. This is my first year as a swim dad. I really have no idea what’s going on. Several pundits have said that the swim dad vote will determine the election this year. I won’t argue. Unless you’re one of the soccer moms in the bleachers with me right now. In which case, the margin of error on this poll is plus/minus 12. What?

The chlorine is getting to me. I’m having second thoughts about wearing this Speedo.

That’s the report from Addison: total and utter unmitigated natatorial chaos.

    bad! bad! but funny!

Ah Loos, one of 200+ facilities that screams “I need some bond money.” IJS

  • Tim Rogers

Louisa, you are so right. Initially we were told that the AC would not be operable today. I’m not sure why. But sitting here now, with the place cooled to an acceptable-but-not-as-cool-as-it-would-be-if-I-had-access-to-the-thermostat temperature, I can’t imagine suffering through six hours here without AC.

    Yes. Six hours.

  • Jason

    Tim – get ready.

I did the swim team thing when I was a kid and it is brutal on parents. Of course, I didn’t recognized that until I was older.

2 minutes of action; 2 hours of waiting.

Loos may look like a dinosaur, but it’s “The Granddaddy of State of the Art Facilities” and also one of the fastest pools in the state of Texas… and many other places.

Btw… is this a YMCA meet or USS???

    If so, GO LAC!!!!!

  • DKC

With the Olympics coming quick, I need to brush up on my swimming terms. What physics are involved to make some water “faster” than others?? I have been contemplating this, and am somewhat confused?

  • Puddin'Tane

It has somthing to do with the gutter system and how the water pushes away(dies out) and is not forced back toward, pushing against the swimmers as they are swimming.

    Or sumptin’ like that. ;)

  • Tim Rogers

Puddin, you know your pool physics. That’s the idea, as I understand it.

It’s the DASA Division A Championship. I have no idea what “DASA” is. But there you have it.

Dining review: the chopped beef sandwich from the concessions window, at $4, was a disappointment. The flavor of the meat was good, but it was so chewy that I thought for a second I’d accidentally eaten the rubber strap on my son’s goggles.

  • Tim Rogers

Two additional thoughts on swimming: 1) I’d guess that water temp would affect speed, too. Warmer, less dense water easier to cut through? Or harder, because it provides less resistence to, for instance, stroking arms, which push against water to create forward motion? 2) Next year, bring in small thermos filled with sangria to make event tolerable?

  • Puddin'Tane

Tim: my daughter swam USS and was a TAGS level swimmer and I also swam Masters…so…swimming was life for a long time!

Being a swim parent can be tough so I suggest idea #2 should be a priority… and a well cushioned stadium seat.

    GET WET AND SWEAT!!!

Btw, I have suffered through a WEEKEND long swim meet at Loos without ac.

Yes, proof that I REALLY love(d) my child!

  • Louisa Meyer, Dallas ISD parent and TOD

I love the pool science and am glad to have something to brag about there. Something else about Loos – is that the longest ADA ramp you’ve ever seen?

District stadium concessions – ewe – another peeve of mine. After 8 years of sampling them all, I give the nod to Mesquite ISD where concessions are managed by their food services division instead of athletics or parent groups.

Here are the Dub-T (WTWhite) Loos pre-game recommendations: Burger House on Marsh @ Spring Valley (you could walk there from Loos.) Manny’s on Midway (owned by a Dub-T family) and then we heart Spring Creek BBQ on Midway because they give $$$ to our programs plus their food is good.

  • Louisa Meyer, Dallas ISD parent and TOD

    oops TOD is a typo.

  • Jason

    @Tim
Cool water is better for swimming. Keep the body cooler and from overheating.

Swimming is a great sport. You can take a really good swimmer and will have 2x the stamina of other “athletes”. When training, the water keeps the body cool so a swimmer can work harder longer. The cardio is incredible.

The meet was great except for the psycho dad that I saw screaming, berating and humiliating his eight yr. old for God knows what. He kept walking off from the child and coming back at him and screaming so more while standing over him and pointing his finger in the little boys face while the red faced child sobbed and his team mates looked on. Awesome parenting in action. Thankfully after my interactions (a verbal tongue lashing) with “super dad” someone had him removed entirely from the natatorium. Poor kid.

  • Puddin'Tane

It’s the Head Ref’s job to remove the offensive participant, swimmer or parent, from the natatorium.

Once at a US meet I witnessed the removal of an outraged HS parent, who was upset at his daughter for not making the championship cut, and the disqualification of the swimmer in question for the entire meet.

It sounds harsh to disqualify the swimmer because of the behavior of the parent, but it had to be driven home to that jackass father that he wasn’t the one in control of the situation and that IT’S A SPORT FOR ENJOYMENT.Hello!

Applause from the stands came as the Head Ref shouted, “this is MY pool and you are outta here!”

  • JC

Well, I am not sure who had him removed but the child’s coach came over to me and told me, “Thank you for saying something to him. He is like that with parents and everyone! It is so bad that I try to keep him away

from all my swimmers-not just his own kids!” This guy was probably about 20 years older and 30 pounds heavier-I am one of the soccer mom’s but I was ready to knock his abusive hateful self silly. (not really-I value my manicure-but you get the point) His son was not DQ’ed-thankfully.

I am sure since this is our first year-I will see the jerk again.

I don’t get why parents have to twist things so much particularly when they are so so young!
