WSJ Jumps on John Wiley Price
By now you know all about the cosmological debate underway at the County Commissioners Court. To sum up: John Wiley Price thinks Ken Mayfield is a racist — who doesn’t know he’s a racist — because Mayfield said the central collections office is a “black hole.” Price posited the existence of a “white hole.” Mayfield countered with a “pink hole.” Following? Well, the WSJ has taken note (scroll down). And, as it turns out, there actually is something called a white hole — kinda. Says the Journal:
[B]lack holes suck. This of course was Mayfield’s point: The central collections office is a “black hole” because paperwork goes in and disappears. It would be a “white hole” if instead it spewed papers out.
So how could Price have gotten this so wrong? Maybe it’s not his fault. Maybe the Texas Legislature is just niggardly when it comes to funding science education.

Maybe Price’s comments would have been less newsworthy if he had just called it a “cracker hole.”
Oh, geez, I’ve seen this before around here. There’s about to be h e double hockey sticks over a word in that WSJ passage.
Yes. There will be hell because someone can’t be bothered to look up the word in a dictionary.
Why use the word “niggardly” in the article. We know it isn’t to show off his English skills. That word may mean stingy but Mr. Webster or whoever didn’t make that word up for a good purpose. The writer didn’t need to use the word and only did it because it contain some form of the “N” word. It wasn’t for good intentions. I don’t care if it’s in the dictionary. The intent wasn’t nice then and wasn’t nice today.

Niggardly is originally an Old Norse word meaning stingy. The “n” word came from the Latin word “niger” which meant black.
I had to take remedial Latin in summer skool at Cistercian so I could be totally wrong.
What ever happened to the days when mistakes were called “boners” and a bunch of guys didn’t giggle like they were back in the 7th grade?

The “niggardly” word was probably the WSJ writer’s allusion to the Washington DC staffer who was forced to resign for using that word in 1999 budget meetings.

I thought Dreher worked at the Dallas Morning News. I wasn’t aware he was moonlighting over at the WSJ. The comment has his Louisiana roots signature.
Old “Teflon John” has been laying low for way too long and needed to see his name in the press. It is a shame that such a talented and dedicated man has to use knit picking racist tactics to get his self recognition jollys.
Also poo poo to the press for giving Teflon John, Rev. Al, Jesse Jackson, etc., so much press attention for their silly tirades. Why not focus on positive stories? These men are stronger racists than those they accuse.

Clearly the writer used the word “niggardly” to make a point about JWP taking a perfectly innocent term and misinterpreting it to mean something racist.

The race card mongers will get their just desserts. They can do this kind of stuff in useless entities like American city and local government, but it won’t do them any good in the global economy. Indian, Chinese, and South American companies are under no obligation to hire, fire, nor reprimand based on American identity (race) politics. The management of those companies will laugh in the face of clowns like Wiley Price.

Johnnyappleseed, Yes, I believe that the writer used the owrd “niggardly” for a good reason. There was a big “stink” similar to this one because a public official used the word “niggardly” in a meeting. The word means “miserly.” It isn’t anywhere close to being racist and neither is saying “black hole.” This PC garbage just has to end.

PC doesn’t sell, with me. We lose our freedom of speech one PC word at a time. It is all about leverage, it is all about control.
Okay. We definitely need to end the “African-American, black, white, etc categorizations and just use American. This will end the embarrassment one feels when ignorance causes people like the clown offended over the scientific term “black hole” and people like Jesse Jackson who jump the gun to label something or someone as racist. It will also prevent people like “paradigm” from making childlike blanket conclusions about a whole group of people due to the actions of a few. I have news for you Paradigm, those of us who live in first world foreign countries aren’t concerned with petty racist banter from blacks or whites. Mr. Webster didn’t “make up” words. Your ignorance is colossal. For your own sake, resolve to become an autodidact, or perhaps follow mizzday’s advice. An education will equip you to give voice to legitimate grievances where they exist. As things stand, no intelligent or educated person will ever take you seriously. Black hole – as in devoid of light – as in the definition of the color black. Black sheep — as in an oddity — as in different — as in, go check out your nearest sheep farm … not many sheep are black. Angels and Devils being associated with light and dark — pretty sure those concepts FAR predated black/white racial politics in the US — guess I’d be willing to accept this one in the realm of possibly having inadvertant racial lineage.
Daniel’s advice make sense to me and should be applied to Wiley and anyone else who shares his through processes and conclusions.

It’s been a long time since Mr JWP had a chance to cry racist. The man is old enough that there was no such term as “black hole” when he was in school. Just goes to show the man does not read newspapers or magazines and never watched science shows. No NOVA or Discovery Channel for him.

Well, I as a white person object to the term ’snow job’. We all know snow is white… Therefore, it is racist against whites.
Yeah, and blizzards produce “white-out” conditions. Not a good thing.
